Show 6A Emery County Progress Tuesday, 23, 1991 April Emery gets Dinos in historic game, but loses to Lehi By LARRY W. DAVIS Progress editor Neither team scored in the CASTLE DALE It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. Charles Dickens was talking about the French Revolution when he wrote those lines in introducing his novel A Tale of Two Cities, but his words also describe the Emery High baseball fortunes in games last week against Carbon and Lehi. Emery opened the week with an emotional 5 extra inning win over Carbon on Tuesday, but the Spartans finished the week with an 7 extra inning loss to Lehi. The loss has left the Spartans with a 3 region mark with games at Uintah on Tuesday and at home against Wasatch on Friday of this week. The win over Carbon was the first in baseball ever for Coach Jim Jones who is in his fourth year as head coach. It was also Carbons first region loss as the Dinos had risen to a No. 5 ranking in the 3A polls. But the win certainly didnt come easy as it took a sacrifice fly ball in the bottom of the eighth by Brodie Barnes to score Gary Bennett from third to win the game. Carbon took a 0 lead in the first, but Emery came back to cut the lead to 1 when Bennett scored on a throwing error. The Spartans took a 2 lead in the bottom of the second as Nash Baltzer, Jared Butler and Cody Wilson drew k walks. Another t walk to Duane Pearson scored Baltzer, and a walk to Mike Gagon scored Butler as Carbon starter Don Ross had trouble finding the strike zone. In his two innings, he walked nine Spartans. In the top of third, Carbon regained the lead with three more runs, and that 3 lead held up until the bottom of the sixth when Emery scored two more to tie things up. Bennett opened with a walk, and then with one out, Gagon was hit by a pitch. After the second out, Barnes doubled to right field, scoring each baserunner to 6-- 8-- 1-- 2-- 2-- 3-- back-to-bac- 5-- put the game at 5-- 5. seventh, but Carbon threatened before Shawn Alton and Baltzer teamed up for a double play. Carbon also failed to score in the eighth, but Emery did. Bennett reached base on a fielding error, went to second on another error and reached third on Carbons third error of the inning. Then with one out and the bases loaded, Barnes flied deep to center field, and Bennett tagged from third and scored. Pearson was the winning pitcher as the senior went all eight innings, giving up five runs on eight hits. He struck out seven and walked four. Against Lehi, Emery wasnt as fortunate as Lehi took an 7 lead in the top of the eighth inning. Pitcher Jason Tahbo then held Emery scoreless in the bottom of the extra inning to take the win although Balter did single with two out to give the Spartans some hope. Lehi scored twice in the top of the first off starter Shawn Alton, but Emery came back with five runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. 8-- Bennett walked and later scored on a double by Pearson who scored on a single by Gus Childs. Baltzer reached base on an error, which also allowed Childs to score, and scored on a hit by Jared Butler. Down Lehi chipped the lead and scored at away two more in the second while holding Emery scoreless through the second, third and fourth. In the top of the fourth,"'' Lehi took the lead when it scored three runs off Childs who came in to relieve Alton. That gave Lehi the 5 lead, but Emery cut that to 6 in the fifth as Childs singled and then scored on a single by Butler and a Lehi error. The Spartans finally came back to tie the game in the 5-- 2, 7-- 7-- sixth. With two out, Gagon singled up the middle, went to second on a walk to Barnes and then scored on a single by Childs. Emery went to freshman Dean Stilson in the fifth and sixth, and he held Lehi score- - ground ball. The winning run for Lehi began with a single by Chad Smith. He stole second and went to third on a sacrifice bunt. The Lehi catcher then scored on a single to right field. Emery will be looking to get back onto the winning track at Uintah on Tuesday. The second half of the season gets underway on Friday as Emery hosts Wasatch, a team which defeated Emery in Heber City to open the region schedule. , K & Citing results of a y w . AmiMi, w . f $ - .
