I, too have been wondering why, when we live in One Nation Under God, we are allowing Him to be pushed out of our public school system without much of a protest. We live in a state that was founded by a group of people who came here so they could practice their religion and worship God without persecution. I realize that since then people of other faiths have come here and joined with us to make Utah, particularly Emery County, a good place to live and raise families; but I believe that is possible because of our combined belief in God and worship, and not in spite of it. How many of us are aware that last year no prayers were heard in any of the graduations in Emery County School District? This was not the case in Carbon School District. Didnt we all get the same conflicting information from the state governors office? Gov. Bangerter has said he feels this decision should be left up to the individual districts until the Rhode Island case is settled. The attorney general urges neutrality, in other words, dont pray. We should note both views are only suggestions and the state is supporting Rhode Islands pro prayer by $10,000. I wonder, how does a communistic state become Godless? Does it start with such small things as omitting prayer at school graduations and ceremonies, or for the silent majority to remain that way so as not to offend a small vocal minority? I for one am proud of my belief in God and want to pass this on to my children. I feel that if we dont safeguard our religious freedom we will lose it and maybe that starts with letting our school board know that we are in favor of prayer at our school graduations. If this is offensive to anyone they can quietly enter after. They have a right to their disbelief in God, but I also have a right to my belief and an obligation to safeguard my right to practice that belief. As do we all Sharon Morley 7-1- elderly, such as Retired Seniors Volunteer Program (RSVP) and the Emery County Nursing Home; Whereas The county of Emery provides or contributes to several emergency services, such as civil defense, ambulance service, law enforcement, city fire department, flood control and the Green River Clinic; Whereas The county of involved in is actively Emery lands management, public economic development, rep- resentation of the publics interest in regard to management of federally owned lands within the county; Whereas The county of Emery provides recreational activities for the community by providing ball fields, camping facilities, television services, county libraries, the county fair and the financial support of various community activities; Whereas The county of Emery provides for the health and welfare of its residents by funding or contributing to services involving alcohol and drug abuse, social services, public and mental health, Housing & Urban Development (HUD); The county of Whereas Emery administers justice by maintaining courtroom facilities, providing two justice court judges, county attorney and public defender services, as well as jail facilities; Whereas County government is the oldest form of local government in the United States; in recognition thereof, Therefore, be it resolved and proclaimed by the county of Emery, state of Utah, that the week of April 7 through 13, 1991, is designated as National County Government Week. But, while drug-relate- d journalism may have lost the power to engage us, the issue of school-ag- e children continug ing to use drugs must command our immedi- ate attention. However inured to it we have become, the drug problem has not gone mind-alterin- away. Even though there have been numerous successes on the war on drugs, Emery County still faces significant challenges. For example, while adolescent drug use has declined in the past five years, and use in Utah is less than in the nation as a whole, significant numbers of our youth are regular users of alcohol, tobac- co, marijuana and other harm- ful substances. Public concern over the dangers of smoking must be increased and preventive measures taken to prevent tobacco usage because tobac- smoking kills more Americans than AIDS, heroin, crack, cocaine, alcohol, car accidents, fire and murder combined. The magnitude of the problem of alcohol still being used by young people at an alarming rate is frightening as it increases crime, violence and tragedies in the lives of victims, families and friends. In fact, alcohol-relate- d highway deaths are the number one killer of 15 to 24 year olds. More than half of all adolescent suicides are related to alcohol and other drugs. Everyone is being asked to help not only to contain drug use, but to work to prevent it. We cannot in good conscience withhold any reasonable effort to minimize the pain and suffering that results from drug abuse. One thing that continues to be clear is that we need all of the help we can get to continue the prog- ress in substance abuse prevention. What can you do?
