Show 14 Brides Edition, June, 1990 Diamonds look alike, have different values white diamond is no color, like a drop of pure spring water. This diamonds dispersion, or fire, speads and separates light like a prism, into all of the spectrums hues. A diamonds clarity is determined by taking into account the number, size, color and placement of very tiny birthmarks known as inclusions. Natures birth marks such as spots, bubbles or lines were included in the stone when it was crystalized from carbon millions of years ago. This makes each stone unique, for no two diamonds have the same inclusions in By DIANE BLAIR Lewis Jewelery Two diamonds that look alike at first, may in fact, have different values. To understand these differences is to understand the 4 Cs: color, clarity, cut and carat weight. Diamonds occur in every color of the rainbow. Although most diamonds are a shade of white, they do come in pale yellow, canary, pink, red, green, blue and brown. The famous Hope diamond is blue, and the n Tiffany diamond is canary. However, the fewer and smaller the inclusions are, the less likely it is that they will interfere with the passage of light through the diamond, and the more beautiful and valuable the diamond will be. Cut is the human contribution to a diamonds beauty. Many people confuse cut with the shape of a diamond because they are cut into a number of shapes, the most popular being round, marquise, oval, pear, and emerald. But cut actually refers to an exact mathematical formula. A finished diamond has 58 facets which are the small, polished planes cut into a diamond. A well cut diamond is the work of a master diamond cutter, and when cut to good proportions, the diamond is better able to handle light, creating more sparkle. Modem facet arrangements are the result of hundreds of years of study and experimentation, as people sought to bring out the special beauty that we prize in diamonds. Carats are like dollars each has 100 units. One-hadollar is equal to 50 cents while a 50 point diamond is one-hacarat. As weight increases, so does the price, as larger stones are rarer. A good rule of thumb is to remember that when the weight doubles, the price lf lf ' " ITS A will quadruple if the quality remains the same. Diamonds are durable, rare and retain their value. But beauty is a subjective, personal concept that is impossible to define. One must first see a stone to get an accurate impression ofits true beauty and personality. Remember, when buying with your heart, let the 4 Cs be your guide. Registering or shopping for wedding presents By 'DEBRA LEE BALDWIN Copley News Service Several years ago I had an experience that opened by eyes to the magic of registering. My best friend was getting married, and I had no idea what to give her. When I consulted her mother, she told me Cathy was registered at one of our citys large department stores. Was she ever registered. Cathy and her fiance had signed up for everything they could possibly need in their new household, from butter knives to a video recorder. I found the perfect gift, something I personally liked very much, something I knew the two of them wanted (after all, they had picked it out) and something in my price range. With that in mind, why not go all out when you register. In addition to department stores, register at a hardware store, a gourmet shop, an antique store, a museum gift shop and even with your travel agent. What fun to thank a friend for two days car rental on Maui. Or for that irresistible art deco vase. Or for desperately needed garden tools.
