If it is a full mount the time is greatly increased and a habitat is actually created for the animal. Such things as a rock and shrubs for a cougar, a shelf and grass for a bear whatever is needed to make the animal look at home are added to the mount. Sam finishes the mouth and the ears, touches up the antlers, the hair is vacuumed and brushed and the head is ready to grace someones wall. Following that process, they are rubbed down with oil and dried for two days. To remove the oil, the capes are tumbled in a huge tumbler and mixed with a special hardwood sawdust from Mississippi that absorbs the oil. Then they are brushed to a beautiful sheen. If the hides were brought in just for tanning, the process ends, but if they are to be mounted the job has just begun. Each animal has to be cus i - The head now has to dry for at least two weeks. When it is finally ready and Raby is prepared to finish it, he brings out the tongue, the teeth, the coloring and the ears. Trophy Taxidermy is a family operation. His wife Gail does most of the art work and Sam does the other work as needed. When a hide comes in, it is completely skinned. The skin and flesh have to be removed from the ears, nose and lips, and everywhere else. Then everything is salted to keep the hair from falling off. A inch layer covers the hide before it is allowed to cure. When all the hides from a particular hunt have been skinned the actual tanning process begins.
