Ernest Weeks and Mr. Evans, principal of Green River High School, have taught the first two training sessions for the peer coach group. These instructors have emphasized that teaching is a decision-makin- g process. These decisions are critical to good teaching. Before designing the lesson, the teacher should obdetermine the jective. Secondly, a task analysis should take place to determine for the objective. Teachers should then think through appropriate teacher behaviors and desired student behaviors that will demonstrate that students have gained the new skills just long-ran- The two instructors specified that goal setting is the process of specifying the direction you want to set for yourself and then monitoring your progress in that direction. The class reviewed the research on goal setting which shows that there u a consistent ge and positive relationship between goal setting and task Inperformance. Mrs. Powell and Mrs. Bishop began the first mentor teacher training session by defining the mentor program. Major emphasis was placed on goal setting during this inservice. Mentor teachers were given the assignment to: 1. State their goals in written form. 2. Identify the time frame in which they would accomplish their goals. 3. themselves Imagine reaching their goals. 4. When the time frame has elapsed, determine if they have in fact reached their goals. 5. Identify which of their efforts worked and which did not. Practical applications of goalsetting in the classroom will be addressed in the Nov. 17 training session. Instructors will treat the subject, Why teach goal setting? The will be following components taught: Goal setting can help students learn from their failures. It increases the likelihood of task completion. It increases the probability of student success. The more goals set, the more tasks completed. The higher the quality of the goal, the higher the guality of the task. Herzog and Vicki Rasmussen. The four are part of a group of Emery District teachers developing their skills as educators. The more specifically the goal is stated, the more likely it is to be accomplished. The research shows that there is a strong relationship between goal setting and a students ability to do deep mental processing and his or her power to use positive thinking. The mentor teacher and peer coach programs will provide training based on the fact that there now exists a science which undergirds the art of teaching.
