Show 12A Emery County Progress Tuesday, November 15, 1988 San Rafael Junior High students participate in the annual Veterans Day program at the school. The students sang and narrated a slide show in honor of America and American veterans. Annual vet program held The annual Verterans Day program was held at San Rafael Junior High School in Ferron as students and guests participated in honoring America and those who have fought in Americas wars. The Friday program included remarks by principal Sam Singleton and a slide presentation with musicial narration from speech students of Kathy Petersen. Mr. Singleton noted that the last of Emery Countys World War I veterans had died since last years program, and he recalled a personal experience of going to Washington, D.C. to see the Vietnam War monument which includes the names of all those killed in that conflict. He said that that war, and all the wars America has been involved in, have helped keep our country free for each generation. Mrs. Petersens class narrated a program of slides which gave information about our country, its symbols and origins. Students indicated that the eagle represents the true meaning of liberty and is the companion of freedom. It represents freedom and safety that are enjoyed in the U.S., and our veterans also represent freedom. The students said that America started with the pilgrams who faced overwhelming odds in forming the greatest civilization that ever existed and has contined to exist for over 200 years. Americas greatness, they suggested, comes from man. The youngsters then sang, Freedom Isnt Free, and America the Beautiful. Slides presented the beauties of America and included America, We Thank You For beaches, national parks, the Colorado Rockies, the deserts of the West, the richness of the midwest, beautiful landscapes of the East and even extended to the natural beauty of Alaska and Hawaii. Another song by the group was, This Land Is Your Land, Narration and additional narration pointed out that other nations have been blessed with great natural resources but havent used them as America has with its free enterprise, hard work, freedom of choice, freedom of purchase and opportunity of employment. Americas economic system has proven to be very successful, the students added. In a musical number, Hello sills & Lo Your the singers Time, honored the American worker. indicated that Americans have been able to escape the disaster of vast numbers of the hungry and have been able to help other counties. We have also helped rebuild war-tocounties and have rushed to the aid of others in need. A song, Reach Out and Touch helped to enhance Americas greatness as allowed by the freedoms Americans enjoy. These include choice of career, family, ownership of property, freedom of purchase, freedom of association and choice, and freedom to look the way we look. Another musical selection, This Is My Country, followed as narration suggested that freedom includes having people who can govern themselves and participate in government by the people and for the people. Also, Americas greatness includes a mixture of people from different societies who are able to live and work together in peace. Hes received wide acclaim for his first three novels and four books of short stories. Weavers first book, Count a Lonely Cadence, has caught the attention of Martin Sheen, who has adapted the novel for film and is directing his son, Charlie, in the lead role. Following his reading at the College of Eastern Utah, and other appearances around the state, Weaver will conduct a reading on Nov. 18 at the Phillips Gallery in Salt Lake k City to benefit the program.
