At first they were leery of the condition, not even certain what mind. The Mattoxes became hooked on fair Ferron after coming to visit close friends, Walt and Amy McGill and family. The McGills left Salt Lake about five years ago for a rural lifestyle. Walt was a San Diego native and Amy an Army brat, living all over the world. They rented a place south of Ferron where they could have horses. They enjoyed the fishing and hunting and sociability of the locality. Walt works for the Utah Department of Transportation, Amy is a cook at the nursing home. The McGills encouraged the Mattoxes to leave Salt Lake and Please call for information on current movies. Gary had been unable to work as dry waller on construction since an accident on the job ruptured two discs. He was paralyzed for several days. He has undergone four surgeries and faces more. To occupy his time he turned his artistic talent to leather-worHe made wallets, purses, belts, clocks, camera cases, anything the customer wanted. I had a woman come into our home who wanted a leather camera case to wear on her belt. She was going on a cruise and wanted to carry her 135 camera in a handy place. I designed it just as she asked. It is a challenge and I am enjoying it. Gary Lee Mattox, born at Murray on Dec. 8, 1946, to Robert and Geraldine Dunell Mattox, was the oldest of seven children. He grew up in the Salt Lake Valley strongly attracted to art. He was forever sketching animals, airplanes, birds, cars and cartoons on his school work. He tried oil painting, but found it too expensive. She is pastured at the McGills. Gary finds careful riding beneficial for the muscles in his lower back, but it is Tony who makes the most use of the mare. Tony went along on the elk hunt at Reeder Canyon. It was a father-so- n outfit backpacking into the wilderness for a week of roughing it. They didnt bag an elk, but they bagged golden memories to feed on. Tony, a junior at Emery High, has rejoiced over the Spartan MON.-WED.-THUR- S. Evening Johnston, who took him home and introduced him to his sister, Betty Ann. Betty Ann was bom March 13, 1950 at Salt Lake and is one of five children. Gary and Betty were married Dec. 28, 1965. Their daughter Anna Marie was about three years old when construction work slowed in Salt Lake City. The family moved to Port Orchard, Wash, where Gary worked for several years. They lived there until 1982 when they returned to Salt Lake. Their son, Tony, was born in Port Orchard. Anna Marie married Scott Russell. They have a son, Jonathon, who is now nearly two years old. The tot is the chief entertainment at the Mattox household since the Russells moved to Ferron a few months ago. It was the first week in July when the Mattox family moved into the home overlooking a magnificent panorama of fields and mountains. At Christmas time a few extra dollars mean a lot to them. Gary has Tandy leather on hand for custom orders. He has several samples in stock. He will take the belt off his waist to show a unique eagle. Gary also makes moccasins, vests, jackets if desired. Since leather is expensive, he has been concentrating on smaller pieces and lower prices, but he suits the demand. He is Christmas Call formation. 384-25- Gary has to spend several hours a day lying prone. He does most of his work in a corner of an upstairs bedroom. I cant just lie down and play dead. I have to keep occupied. He has helped haul wood for an elderly gentleman. That is one way of becoming acquainted in town. Betty and Amy, on the other hand, find their sport riding the Mattox quadrunner. They put 65 miles on it traveling up to the transmitter station on Horn Mountain. They rode to Ferron Reservoir, returning home, laughing all the way. is Now that Christmas make to is time it hovering nigh, treats. The Mattoxes like this peanut butter fudge. PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE 3 C. 1 sugar C. brown sugar cube margarine iy C. milk YC. white Karo 116 tsp. soda 1 tsp. vanilla C. chunky peanut butter Mix everything together Yz except peanut butter and vanilla. Stir well and put over medium heat. Cook to a soft ball or to 225 degrees on the candy thermometer. Remove from heat and pour into a large glass pyrex bowl or dripper. Cool until warm on bottom of pan. Add vanilla and peanut butter and stir. When the mixture starts to set, scoop out onto waxed paper and make into rolls. The rolls may be topped with melted chocolate and sliced. x REG.
