Show 6A Emery County Progress Wednesdayov ember 5, 198A Turn out it over tine lights By Larry W. Davis Progress editor Two and half minutes were left In the game, but nonetheless someone decided it was time to sing Turn Out the Lights The Partys Over" as Emery was in the midst of what turned out to be its only scoring drive of the evening In last week's state quarterfinal playoff game at Grantsville. Behind 23--0 at the time, it was probably an appropriate song for the occasion, but to literally turn out the lights was a bit too or so it seemed. As it much turned out, the lights went out as the ball was in the air between quarterback Davin Stilson and wide receiver Dell Stilson. In the darkness, Stilson caught the ball, made a nice move to the inside, broke to the outside and picked up 28 yards to the Grantsville 20. After a 15 minute delay, the lights came back on, and on the next play, it was Stilson to Stilson again for a gain to the one. From there, Davin Stilson took the ball in on a quarterback conversion sneak. A attempt failed as the Spartans remained three touchdowns behind at 23-- 6 with 2 : 24 to play. That one moment of glory came too late for the Spartans who had been frustrated throughout the game by a very solid Cowboy team which has now advanced into the semifinals against Richfield on to be the toughest they played this season. The undefeated Cowboys, who have been ranked the top 2A team in the state, might also admit that Emery was one of their most difficult opponents In 1986 as well. It wasnt until the second half that the host team was able to do much offensively as it was held to Just a field goal In the first half. With 6:30 left in the half, Grantsville used its highly touted running tandem of Jared Hunsaker and Curtis Ware to move the ball from its own 31 to the Emery 14. From there, Dennis Gilbert had no trouble field goal with kicking a 39 seconds to play in the half for the games initial score. It was only three points, but for Grantsville it ended a frustrating first half which was filled with two punts and a fumble, the latter coming when Dell Stilson stripped the ball from Ware after the Cowboy running back had carried the ball for a gain to the six. Spartan But the first half was no treat for Emery either as punter Wade Jewkes was called on three times. However, on the second Emery possession, the Spartans put together one of their best drives of the game, moving from their own 20 to the Cowboy 29 before running out of downs. In that drive, Emery picked up 14 yards on a Stilson to Darrell Pugmire pass and then gained 30 yards on a halfback pass from Joel Wilson to Dell Stilson. Runs by Wilson and Devin Arnold got Emery to the 29, but a very quick, aggressive Grantsville defense would allow no more as Emery failed to get a first down on a fourth1 and four 35-ya- rd 10-ya- rd Saturday. For Emery, the loss meant the end of the season, and while it was frustrating to see it all end, the players generally came away from the game knowing they had played well against a team most of them considered (Continued on Page 7A) rl r, rt After falling behind, Emery was forced to the air against Grantsville.
