Show 4A Emery County Progress Wednesday, November 5, 1986 No doubt litis it nnnc lit litis Scratchy 45s bridge generation gap Uuildiiif. f By ROSANN FILLMORE tradition by Larry W. Staff writer In one of her cleaning and throwing away fits my mother gave me a box of old records, She probably thought I deserved them since I had driven her crazy playing them over and over and over as a child. They werent the rock n roll of teenage days, but the siUy recordings that delighted me as a child. Darren found them in the Davis Seeing the Emery football season come to a close last week at Grantsvllle was a bittersweet experience. Bitter because well, It was the end; but sweet because It had been such a gratifying season for those of us who have followed the Spartans. One thing Is for sure, The team was the greatest show around, filling the stands for each home game while many fans had to stand around the fence to watch the kids play. There was something about this team that seemed to hold a mystique over football partisans. From week to week, game to game, It seemed that there was a consistent aura of victory. Emery players knew going Into every game that they could win regardless of who the opponent might be or on which field the game was to be played. It was apparent from the first game at San Juan that the Spartans were different from previous Spartan teams. Early in that game they were down by a wide margin, but came back to score three times In the final period and then conversion In overtime. win the game on a That could have been the beginning, but believe that the beginning went back even further than the start of this season. think that an attitude was born In the previous season which left the kids coming back this year with the feeling that they could win and that being from Emery, a school with a tradition of losing In football, didn't mean that just because you fall behind you have to give up. In my first interview with coach Jimmy Jones in the principal's office of the high school on a spring afternoon nearly two years ago, he told me that the thing he wanted to do more than anything else as coach at Emery High was to help build a winning attitude, and not just a winning attitude in football but in all sports. Such is becoming obvious at the school. It is amazing how a winning sports program at a high school can boost the morale of the entire student body, faculty and administration. It carries over into the communities as well. Sports programs are often criticized as being a distraction from academics, but I've seen successful athletic programs do more to build a positive attitude toward all school activities, including those in the classroom, than most anything else within a school setting. Emery is learning how to win and Is on the verge of learning how to put an opponent away once it's in its grasp. Saturday. It had closet threatened to rain or snow all day, so he got out the Fisher-Pric- e phono and put them on. They were unbelievably awful, scratchy and tinny sounding, nothing like sound of today. Since Fisher-Pric- e the had omitted 78 rpms when they designed their childrens record them at 45. I was shocked to find my children didnt know the bunny hop. I thought the bunny hop was prerequisite to grade-schopartying. I lined them up and proceeded to teach them how to hop. Eric said "When do we get to be a choo-cho-o train? I was glad they knew the hokey pokey, but they played it over and over while Eric giggled. "Do the hokey hokey again, he kept hollering. When they found the baby elephant walk they assumed there must be a dance to go to that. I assured them they would I wondered if have to the walls would come tumblin down. It also takes time for those other than athletes to learn how to have a positive attitude and how to express that sense of pride that comes with a successful program. It Hopefully, this attitude will establish itself within the cheerleaders, drill team and fans as well as within each member of the team. We are learning at Emery that "school spirit" isn't something limited to the editorial pages of the school newspaper, but is something that sets a positive tone for many facets of our lives. We're learning that there is something of substance in the words of a school song and that it isn't an embarrassment to cheer with cheerleaders and stand when our team comes onto the field. We're learning, but we've got a long way to go since there is no limit to what we can do to support our teams. After all, it is the team that is setting the example for us to follow.
