DAVIS Progress editor Coach Mark Hansen has a problem. Hes a first-yea- r wrestling coach at Emery High ; hell be taking his team through region competition which in- cludes three teams which placed in the top five in state last season; and hes trying to build from a team which in 1984 placed 15th out of 17 teams at state and did not have a single wrestler place in the top six. Well be a young, green team, the coach said while looking over the ranking board last week in the wrestling gym. Weve got a lot of hard work ahead of us if were going to get anywhere this season. The Spartan season will get underway on Wednesday, Nov. 28 with wrestlers from Altamont and Duchesne coming to Emery for an evening match. Coach Hansen said that efforts are being made to add another team match since to the double-duCarbon, which had originally been scheduled to compete, has dropped out. Weve been working on basic moves, Coach Hansen said of his first weeks practice. Workouts have been kept to the simple moves, but weve el worked on a lot of things. We get involved in these practices, and before we know it, the time is up. About 30 wrestlers are vying for the 12 varsity weight classes this season, and in most cases the competition has been keen. I wish we had twice this many out for the team, the coach said. Competition within the team is the best way to build. By the end of last week, Coach Hansen was still somewhat in the dark about the strength of this years team. Challenge matches hadnt been held and ranking matches were not scheduled until Friday af- However, the coach with many of his grapplers while wrestling coach through four seasons at Canyon View Junior High, and he got a good look at the San Rafael wrestlers during that time as well. The coach said that a lot of division changes can take place before the first match so many of the wrestlers working out at their normal weight will either be wrestling up or down during the season. At this point, the Spartans have two sophomores in the division. Travis Taylor and Mike Vaughn have junior high experience and will be working to expand that to be competitive in that division. In the 105 class, Mitch Horton, Mike Baker, and ternoon. worked 98-l- b. Robert Bell, also all sophomores, will be battling for the varsity spot as the first two division show no returning lettermen. It isn't until the 112 division that Emery shows any varsity experience and that comes from Dustin Taj lor who was a wrestler last season who qualified for the state tournament. Also in that division is 98-l- b. Kevin Behling, a junior, who has high school experience but limited varsity experience. The only wrestler listed in the 119 class is sophomore Darrin Hurdsman who got some varsity experience as a ninth grader since he was allowed to compete for several matches until the Utah High School Athletics Association determined that ninth graders could not wrestle at Emery, In his short stint as a varsity wrestler, Hurdsman finished first at a tournament in Richfield. Senior Daymon Leonhardt and junior Morgan Hatch, both lettermen, are looking to claim the 126 lb. division. leonhardt qualifed for state in the 112 class last season while Hatch wrestled in the 126 division most of last season although he failed to qualify for state. Also in the competition in that division are Terrill Rassmussen and Seth Allred, both sophomores. Moving up from the 119 lb. class where he lettered as a sophomore is Guy Allred who is looking for a 132 lb. spot this season. However, senior Mark Sanchez, who did not wrestle last season, and sophomore Jared Huntsman, are also hoping for the varsity position and should make the competition tough. Allred qualified for state last season. Two juniors and a sophomore are listed in the 138 category. Juniors Mike Barnes and Glen Farnsworth each have great strength but need to establish some varsity experience. Sophomore Sam Priggemeier will be pushing both upper classmen. One of the Spartans most consistent wrestlers of 1984 will be looking to wrestle in the 145 division. Shawn McCourt, a senior, qualifed for state last season in the 138 lb. class. He will be getting competition from senior Ted Allen and sophomore Cody VanBuren. Like Hurdsman, VanBuren got some varsity experience while a ninth grader.' At 155, the Spartans will have sophomores Seth McCourt, Richard Riggle, and Ryan Johansen. Each had successful junior high records which will make competition in that weight tough although Coach Hansen said all three may not stay in that division. The 167 class wrestlers from Emery include Wade Ivie, a junior, and sophomores Bobby Trent Hess. This is another division with little experience in high school competition, but Coach Hansen is hoping that the three will press each other while bringing the best out in each. Robert Johansen is listed as the only 185 lb. wrestler. Although he has good size and strength, the sophomore has no varsity experience. Unlimited wrestler, junior Gary Robinson, also has tremendous strength but did not wrestle last season. That leaves only Emery in the region since Grantsville does not have a wrestling program. yet clear which teams will be participating. Although the coach said he is planning on having the third annual Spartan Wrestling Tournament in January, it is not |
