Show Emery County ProqrtssWednoday, November 14, I9B4 7A Coach looks to improve program During the l!;0s and early 70s, one school in Idaho dominated high school wrestling, and throughout much of that reign of mat terror, one family dominated the team. The Hansen boys of Tetonia became the nucleus of the Teton High School wrestling program which established a dynasty which took nearly a decade before it showed any signs of crumbling. The deterioration of the dynasty began to surface as the Hansens graduated, but their loss to the high school In Driggs, Idaho, was BYU gain as the four brothers went on to establish collegiate fame in the Western Athletic Conference as well as the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Just as the boys left Teton High School, they too graduated from BYU. However in one instance, BYU's loss became Emery Countys gain when one of the Hansen brothers, Mark, came to Emery County to teach and couch wrestling five years ago. On Monday, Mark Hansen began his new career as the Emery County High School wrestling coach after four successful years as wrestling coach at Canyon View Junior High. He accepted the position when his friend and BYU wrestling teammate Reed Fehlberg resigned at the end of last season. Coach Hansen has a simple approach to wrestling. "I plan to take the individual talent of every member of the team as far as it can go, being trying to build at Emery High, a winning tradition. Wrestling is an individual sport, but it takes an entire team to win," he said. The best wrestling teams are those that have depth with the top wrestlers being pushed by other wrestlers on the team who want their spots. Its the number two guy that makes the nurner one he said. To reach that point, the coach says hell offer his eipertise which lias come from a high school state championship as well as a glorious collegiate career which Includes three wrestling letters from BYU, two WAC championships, and being named the conference's outstanding wrestler. But theres more to building winners than what a coach can offer, and coach Hansen knows that, in order to be the best, an individual has to practice and dedicate himself to the sport, he said. I plan to give the kids as much mat time as possible to bring out their talents. However, he expects a lot from his wrestlers as well. Coach Hansen got down to business with the 1984-8version of the Emery High wrestling team Monday after school by getting the squad right out on the mat, There was no list of rules on the board or review of the schedule ahead. The team did take time to run around the wrestling room and then around the gym where the basketball team was also involved in its first practice. During that little jog, the team chanted, Wrestlers number one! " That's part of his style. It amounts to a desire to make the kids feel good about what they ore doing, and to Instill a pride in them about a sport which has made up a great deal of his life. Coach Hansen said that much of the success Teton High School experienced in wrestling was due to the coach. You can bet that thought is there too, in the new coach's mind. He knows that through a lot of hard work, he can make a difference, but any success the team might have, will only come from an equal amount of hard work by each member of the team, and when youre trying to build a winning program, hard work goes without saying. 5 practice on Monday, he told the or so who came out for the team that he didnt lan to keep them in lengthy practices but that e expected them to make the most of the practice time by working very hard each day. "Our school has a tradition of backing off in some sports, Including wrestling, he said. "I believe that we should be moving ahead. He pointed out that not only has Emery never won a state wrestling championship, only one wrestler from Emery has every won an individual title, that being Ferd Allred in 1983. Coach Hansen said that much of the success of any team depends on the caliber of the competition, however, he also believes that those teams with winning traditions, those who win on courage and dedication, are those who rise above the rest year after year. In addition, Utah fisheries managers are preparing an entirely new format for the fishing regulations. An individual will simply check the general regulations, then refer to the area section where their favorite fishing water is located to determine if any special seasons or limits apply.
