Davis Progress Editor There is some good news and some bad news about the Emery County High School Basketball Team this season. The bad news is the team will not go through the season undefeated, but the good news is that the Spartans will not go winless either. All that was decided in the first week of play when the Spartans lost the opening game to Manti Friday night but then bounced back to defeat Altamont on Saturday, giving the team a record going into Wednesdays home game against Millard. In the season opener for ECHS, mistakes by the Spartans proved to be the difference as poor shooting, excessive turnovers, and a low field goal 1- -1 shooting percentage kept Emery just out of reach of Manti as the local team lost In the second period, the Spartans scored just four points after trailing by three at the end of the first quarter. We blew several easy shots in that 46-4-2. period, Coach James Nelson said. That put us in a hole, and we had to play catchup the rest of the night. In the teams effort to come from behind in the second half after trailing 17-1- at the 1 mid- point in the game, several bright moments emerged for the Spartans. Coming off the bench in the second half, junior guard Blaine Peterson led a comeback which brought Emery to within two at the end of the third period. Peterson, according to Coach Nelson, led the teams press, full-cou- rt creating several turnovers while scoring on the break. The junior finished with 12 points, all coming in the second half. Another bright spot for Emery in the first game was the inside play of Curt DeFriez who pulled down a game high 13 rebounds while scoring six points. Also playing well on the front line for the Spartans was Evan Wilson who scored 12 points to join Peterson as the teams high point men. lost the game, but our never guys gave up, Coach Nelson said. However, the Bulldogs moved the lead to 1 on an ace by Riley. Then, Canyon View got two points off the serve of Cheryl Oviatt to narrow the gap, 14-- 15-- DeFreiz, Lund and Peterson shredded the Longhorn press for 17 points as Emery the visitors 5 to coast to the win. Emery will usher in the Thanksgiving break by hosting Millard Wednesday night and will then entertain Richfield on Saturday. The Bulldogs won the first game 9 and the second 2 to post the league win. Terry Thomas hit for seven in the third period as Emery jumped to a 23 point lead at That eventually went to a lead of over 40 points in the final stanza as even the Spartan bench contributed heavily to the scoring. Thomas led the team with 16 points while Terry Thomas came in with 14. Jim Lund also finished in double figures with 11 while all 11 JV players got into the scoring column.
