Show TV 4A Emery County Progress Wednesday, August 4, 1982 1982 Copier MONUMENT Drunk driving myth can kill Myths die hard. Like the myth that a cup of cotfee, a deep breath of air, or a cold shower will clear the head of a drinking driver. Although it is true that different people react to alcohol In ditferent ways, the fact is that the more alcohol in the bloodstream, the greater likelihood of an accident. Only time will lower that alcohol level. But myths die hard. Tonight a driver will gulp some coffee, take a deep breath, turn the key in the ignition and head out onto the highway. That driver has done it so many times it never crosses his mind that the law of averages might catch up with him. Tonight could be the last time. acSome 25,000 people died last year in alcohol-relatecidents on the highways. And that doesn't count the other million who survived but were hospitalized, disfigured or disabled. In Utah alone, 135 people were killed in alcohol-relateaccidents in 1980, 40 percent of the total 335 fatalities. It is estimated by the Department of Public Safety that at night in Utah one of five drivers has been drinking. That brings us to another myth. It is one that says there is nothing the average citizen can do about the drinking driver. Like most myths, that is simply not true. Although punitive measures against the convicted driver might help keep him off the highway next time, they don't restore lives. But preventive measures can save lives by keeping drinking drivers off the road before accidents occur. Prevention begins at home. Every person who drinks should make sure his or her own drinking and driving behavior falls within the limits of safety and common sense. Next, that common sense extends to friends and relatives. Don't let someone who has had too much to drink leave on his own. Offer to drive him home, call a taxi, or suggest he stay overnight. If he insists on driving, take away his keys. It might make him angry but it could save his life. When on the highway, watch for drunk drivers and report them through the REDDI program of the Utah Highway Patrol to any local law enforcement unit. They'll check out the car and driver and take whatever action is appropriate. Watch for too fast or slow speed or erratic speed changes, frequent lane changing, improper passing or excessive swerving, overshooting or disregarding traffic signals, approaching signals unreasonably fast or slow, jerky stops and starts, driving at night without lights, failure to dim lights, driving too close to shoulder or straddling the center line, driving with head partly or completely out of window. Jien reporting a suspected drunk driver, give a description of t)e vehicle, license number, location and direction traveling. The life you save could be your own, that of a loved one, or that of the driver you reported. But you've killed a myth. We need support for the Girl Scouts in Emery County. Also, volunteers to work with the service team on the adult level are needed. We will have a cadet troop in Castle Dale. We also will have troops in Emery. Call Ruby Wright County. I . Girl Scout call for the leader in your town at 748-225- 3. I have worked with the Girl Scouts for over one year. All I can say is thanks. Your Community Chairman; Ruby Wright Attention, all Emery County residents! Let your voice be heard. Did you know that your vote in the upcoming September 14 primary will determine who gets put on the ballot in the November elections? Do you have favorite candidates? If you haven't registered to vote by August 13, you will not be able to give them your support in the primary. There are two candidates running for many of the offices, but only one can be on the ballot in November. Your vote in the primary tells the county who you want on that November ballot. So please, go to the Clerk's office in the Emery County Courthouse on Main Street in Castle Dale between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday thru Friday and register. Now is the time to let your opinions be heard. Now you can decide whom you want serving you, the people of Emery at the this business, people often ask us what the future holds. guess they feel that since we are around the news so much, we are able to forecast the change in the winds. But have found myself treading dangerous waters anytime I try to predict what tomorrow will bring. In "The Book of Predictions," Amy and Irving Wallace, the same folks who brought us "The Book of Lists," have compiled the predictions of ten psychics quoted most often by that famous rumor sheet, "The National Enquirer." The list, r which spans a time period, shows these 98.9 were wrong prognosticators percent of the time. Six of the a had of success rate zero percent. One bold genpsychics tleman even went so far as to predict that Muhammad Ali would be elected to Congress in 1979 the only problem being that 1979 wasn't an election year. In spite of these dire facts, am going to stick my neck out, and become a psychic-for-a-daThe following is my list of for next the few possible predictions years: predict that by December, 1988, many Americans will be five years older. dress predict that Nancy Reagan will open a second-hanshop after leaving the White House. predict Ronald Reagan's memoirs will never be published, since he won't be able to remember anything anyway. predict that Sylvester Stallone will retire after com-- ! pleting Rocky XV. predict that by 1999, we will all be driving disposable cars; they simply fall apart after you get to where you're going, and you wad them up and throw them away. American auto manufacturers seem to be well on their way to perfecting this invention. predict that the above prediction will never come true, since Iran,' Iraq and Israel will have succeeded in blowing up the Middle East, so there won't be any gasoline to use anyway. predict that President Reagan will balance the budget, bring us out of the recession, create thousands of new jobs, and stop inflation. Cows will also learn to fly. So there you have it Nostradamus I ain't. But if you think you can do better; go for it. ' mean, you couldn't do any worse than "The Enquirer."
