The chronology of the events leading to the Ranger station transfer is herewith enumerated Late May-ear- ly June; Initial, rumors of transfer of castle Dale Ranger station to Price. ic meJune 14; Private eting held in Emery County Courthouse with 3 Emery county Commissioners, Su-Me Laughlin, and Ranger Ira Hatch. Commissioners strongly objected to proposal. It was disclosed that as of that date that supervisor McLaughlins reorganization proposal had already received approval from the U.S. Forest service in Washington, D.S. June 22; public meeting, Emery Co. Court House, attended by Forest service personnel, representatives from Emery County towns and Livestock Association, and interested public. Protests from all were voiced, June 26; Letter written to senatorWa-llac- e Bennett explaining Supervisor McLaughlins proposed reorganization, presenting alternative plan for Huntington site, and enlisting his support. June 30; Communications from County Commissioner chairman Gardell snow with June 29 Sun Advocate dipping quoting supr. McLaughlin as saying to the Price City council "the people he has spoken to are either strongly in favor of the change or were mostly indifferent to it," He gave November as a transfer date. July 12; Letter from supervisor McLaughlin discussing and generally discounting the Huntington site proposal. Concludes by saying "Price is more centrally located considering management needs of the new district in total... and will enable us to provide better service to a greater segment of the public. July 19; Letter from sen. Bennett to The letter written to theEmeryCounty Commission by Vem Ham re. Regional Forester, and published in the Progress-Lead- er October 19, prompts this letter summarizing the events and circumstances leading to the transfer of the Forest Rangers office from Castle Dale to Price. The people of Emery County should know that many concerned organizations and citizens spent considerable time, effort, and exped, much nse trying to keepthat used, facility within the County. I was contacted approximately June 1, by both the Emery County Commission and by the Emery County Republican Chairman asking if I would enlist his support in an effort to keep the Ranger station in Emery County. Before proceeding I made several telephone calls and personal contacts with county and Forest officials to learn of the complete administration reorganization plan being proposed by Mr. George McLaughlin, Manti-Las- al supervisor, whose central administrative offices are located in Price. In brief , that plan calls for consolidating the five existing Mantl Ranger stations to three, one to be located in Ephraim one at Ferron, and one to be established in or near price. It became quite apparent that with the transfer of the Cottonwood creek Draig-ag- e units to the Ferron Ranger District, it was probably unrealistic to expect to keep the Castle Dale station intact. Therefore an alternative plan with defensible, logical rationale was jointly discussed and proposed. This alternative to Supervisor McLaughlins plan to move the unit to Price proposed to locate the administrative site for the North-Ea- st Manti Forest in Huntington, specifically just North of the city on Highway 10. The full rationale for this proposal was contained in letters written to supervisor George McLaughlin and to senator Wallace Bennett, (all corresp- - closed-to-publ- pt. much-neede- UDK3UUE3I R. McGuire, chief U.S. Forester, Wash. D.C., questioning the proposed site location (in price), and presenting with his support the alternative proposal made by the various Emery County interests. July 25; Lettertosen. Bennett from Chief Forester McGuire, Wash.D.C., referring Bennett letter to Ogden Regional Office for reply. Aug. 11; Letter to sen. Bennett from Ve-- rn Hamre, Regional Forester, Ogden, discussing and rebutting the Emery County-Se- n. Bennett proposal for Huntington site. Concludes by justifying the move to Price. Aug. 14; Emery Co. Commissioners drafted and sent a letter of protest to Ogden Regional Forest office (Vern Hamre) protesting proposal site move to Price and requesting site location within Emery Co. Aug. 22; sen. Bennett letter with copy of Hamre letter and expressing doubt for Huntington site proposal. Nov. 13; Forest service letters to permittees informing them that implementation of the new plan would take effect Nov. 26, and the establishment of a new administrative site in Price. EDITOR LETTERS TO Each person must arrive at their own conclusion regarding the whole matter. Mine are as follows; (1) that the Manti Forest Administrative plan was unilaterally conceived, processed, and approved before any knowledge of the plan was known to the public. (2) that the "public hearings" were after the fact. (3) that the protests and recommendations from citizen and organizations of Emery County were in fact ignored. (4) that at a time when Emery County particularly the Huntington Canyon area, is experiencing its greatest development ever, it was most unwise and unjustified to unilaterally remove from the area a Forest administration site. (9) that another resource providing public service, employment, and community betterment has been lostto Emery County. Th.iiii You, Jim Peacock.
