Thats easy to do if statistics are used withous explanation and elaboration. Rut it's a case where statistics, even though they don't lie, do delude. Vance Packard makes this plain in his new hook, The Waste Makers. He points out that Russias rate of economic growth ... is less remarkable than that of Mexico, Japan or West Germany. Compared with that of the United States, its percentage of annual growth of output seems impressive simply because it is starting from a lower base and because it is an underdeveloped country trying to catch up with an overdeveloped one. Economist W. Allen Wallis, special assistant to the President observed in I960, Even if Russian growth rates continue higher than ours, the abso-lu- e gap between us will continue to increase for some time to come. There is no possibility that the Russian economy will overtake our at any time in the visible future certainly not in this century. In most fields of production, Russia is building from a base which we passed 30, 10 or 50 years ago. Under these circumstances mere percentage growt figures are almost meaningless. The Communist agents among us are many and they are skilled in their nefarious work. They have enlisted tens of thousands of Americans in their hundreds of Communist fronts, thus creating a powerful force working for Communist world-wid- e objectives. But one of the most destructive tactics is that of keeping American opinion shattered into many fragmentary groups, badly divided on basic issues, undecided on basic principles. For instance, the Communists have persuaded many influential Americans that there is really no specific definition for the term The American way of life. These loyal but misguided Americans contend that the term is an abstraction," there are as many definitions 4221 manner between now and New Years Day. These lives have been and will be lost in traffic, the home, occupational and recreational activities, and miscellaneous accidents in public places. these 5$$-plAccompanying deaths will be thousands of badly injured persons and over $10 million in economic losses. The total score will be far and away the most terrible and costly crime to have been committed in the state in this or any other year, according to the Council. It will mean, also, a per capita cost of over $ 10.00 for every man, woman, and child in the state, aside from the grievous personal suffering involved. One half of this terrible loss will have been suffered as the result of traffic mishaps. The crime will not, generally speaking be premeditated, but the result of carelessness, ignorance, selfish violations of laws and ordinances, and other kinds of physical failures. Because each accident usually is the result of such factors, the Council stresses the moral responsibility that rests with each individual to prevent such accidents. The Council is issuing a strong plea to all organizations, churches, and agencies to emphasize this necessity during November and December. It calls attention to the Thanksgiving and Christmas observances ahead, and the appropriateness of the Holy Commandment Thou Shalt Not Kill. ober.
