One of the most common expressions of consternation comes from the mother whose son has just been caught stealing from a store. "I tell you, Judge, I just cant understand it! Tell me why he should do such a thing! If I have told him once, Ive told him a million times to stay out of bad company. These modern kids . . . Parents, teachers, juvenile authorities, judges, policemen, lawyers, bankers, businessmen all want to know the same question: Why did he do it? What is it that causes people to act? We send children to school where they absorb facts a heterogenious number of things. We assume that if the child knows the facts, he will act in accordance with the facts. Yet the newspapers every day refute such an idea. Nevertheless, we refuse to change our ideas. We are thoroughly convinced that the way to educate a child is to fill him full of facts. Do the facts restrain or stimulate action? Let us examine a few real cases. A teen aged boy and his father had had a great deal of difficulty about his staying out late. His father scolded, argued, and then finally threatened. He didnt like a seventeen year old boy driving the car anyway. Finally he laid down the law. If you arent in by twelve oclock, tonight. Ill never let you take the car again! The boy knew his father meant it. But he stayed out until three and then the next morning he lied and said that he was in before twelve. A girl had fallen in love with a certain fellow whom her mether knew to be of low character. The mother tried scolding first, then ridicule. That beagle-nose- d brute! I warn you! If you keep on going out with that trashy low life, youll rue the day! The girl sneaked out and went with the boy again and again. Three months later, finding that she was- - pregnant, she was forced to marry the boy, although all her flaming desire for him was gone. There was a man using a power saw on the job. The foreman warned him not to peg the blade guard back. He said it was not only against the rules, but it was exceedingly dangerous. The carpenter gave the foreman the horse laugh. The next week he went to the hospital with his leg almost completely severed ut He WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND! Doing a Good Job We would like to congratulate the county water users association- headed by Commissioner Clyde Conover- for the excellent way in which it is handling the planning and pushing of the Emery County Project. ' In a meeting called by Commissioner Conover last well inTuesday, the water users of the county were very formed as to the problems and procecdures included in the Joes Valley project. Two of the top men in this line, men who have the interest of the project at heart and are doing ill they can to hurry the process, were on hand to speak and to answer any questions that were raised. Representing the Bureau of Reclamation, Engineer the Neeley outlined the entire project, and outlined some of tTie is work begun necessary steps that must he taken bclore on the actual construction. Letters : NORTH EMERY - - His talk was supplemented by Jay Bingham, executive secretary' of the Utah Water and Power Board, who told those present exactly what could and should be done to push the work along. Topics discussed included costs, method of repayment, per acre costs, capacity ol reservoir, use of water, and many others. The reservoir, which will store approximately 57,000 acre feet of waler, will encompass approximately 10 miles of shoreline. The project is now in the final planning stage, which consists of detailed information that must he obtained and compiled in report form before an appropriaion can be made. An aerial survey must be made of all irrigable lands. All ditches and laterals must be planned out to the last detail. And many other phases of planning must be carried out. The government agencies will work through the county water users committee, until such time that it is deemed feasable to form a conservancy district. Any question or suggestion on the project should he taken up with this Little Worn-Ou- t Shoes pair of worn out shoes is sometimes hard to look a as blessing. But remember that some children never upon have a chance to wear out a pair. They are the little ones who daily cast wistful glances at the door when they hear the sound of happy, playing children. Look at your childrens shoes. Do the scuffs on them tell you of the fun they had rumping and playing because the Lord has blessed them with normal health. A little hj Jeen-Jai- To The Editor h ' Orangeville, Utah January 1 U Judy Jensen A Reporter North Emery High School & 25, 1957 Dear Mr. Charles Ferguson, Concerning the article you printed in- the United Mine Workers Journal January 1, 1957 about Ted Robertson of Orangeville, Utah, I'd like to say this to you. You didnt know Ted as I have, living as a neighbor across the street from him for Si years. Have you seen how devoted to his family he was? Well I have. Have you seen him pick up 3 of his children at once to love them? Well I have. Have you seen him romp on the lawn with his own and all the neighbor children (about 15 others)? Well I have. Did you see him helping his children on Christmas Day learn to ride their new bikes? Well I did. Did you ever see him take his children for a ride on the tractor his own or the neighbors children fishing nieces, nephews, just plain kids? No one that good with children could be maliciously mean. Ted, to my knowledge, never khowingly hurt anyone in his life which is more than you can say. by It seems that the topic of every conversation, the thing uppermost in every mind at North Emery is basketball. A month later, the husband was in jail charged with a double murder. A boy had been getting low grades in school. He had been spending quite a few nights out playing basketball with the explorer scouts. The father in sent his boy upstairs to do his homework. That night the boy slipped out the bathroom window and made sixteen points in the game. The doctor warned the girl. You must quit eating so much, especially fattening foods. Here is a diet.
