Show EMERY COUNTY PROGRESS, CASTLE DALE, UTAH PAGE TWO THE READER'S ; DATE BOOK I Friday, November 2, 1951 - Maine Town Promotes Hunting Season to Attract Business A small town in Maine, in the heart of the best deer hunting country in the northeast, has set an example of promotion that many home towns across the country could duplicate with a little effort. The promotion will pay off within the next month when an estimated 5,000 hunters visit the community and spend thousands . of dollars in its Main Street stores. The community is Old Town. Last 6,002 deer, many of them in or over class, were killed In the county, some of them within a few minutes driving time of the heart of the town. For years Old Town has boasted that it considers itself the deer capital of the continent. In the immediate area it had a fine reputation for hospitality. But the community had never made a unified year the d and determined promotion effort to sell itself. This year, how- ever, the Junior Chamber of Commerce and other civic organizations with th Jaycees taking the initiative launched a promotion campaign that is attracte hunting the attention of ers across the nation. The Jaycees printed and distributed an attractive booklet telling the nations hunters about the community and the hunting possibilities. It was the official invitation of the community to hunters throughout the east. And to start the hunting season off with a flourish, the Jaycees served a hunting breakfast from 3:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. on opening day. A ticket to the breakfast entitled the hunter to enter the Jaycee sponsored Largest Deer Contest. As prizes the Jaycees offered a Winchester .270 for the largest buck Local hardware and sporting goods stores will find that hunting promotions will stimulate business, Contests, conducted along lines used in fishing contests, creates goodwill and brings customers into the store who might not have been reached in any other manner. Most local newspapers are anxious to participate in such programs because it means better business for the community and the reader interest it creates in his newspaper. The home town that sponsors a hunting promotion might also promote a Safe Hunting Week. Safety is good business, too. There is hardly a small town in the nation that has not been the scene of a tragic hunting accident. And even when there has been no loss of life, hunting accidents have caused many to lose an arm or leg, handicapping the individual for life. Here are the cardinal rules of hdhting safety: Treat every gun as a loaded gun. Be absolutely certain of your target. Do not point the muzzle at anything you do not want to shoot, nor allow it to stray in the direction of another hunter. Remember that rifle slugs may ricochet. Do not shoot at water or any hard, smooth surface. Unload your gun before you get into your own car or before you enter your camp or home. Then check it twice to be sure. Think, think, think. Be sure that its game. It could be a human being and end tragically. Hunt safely and allow others to do the same. Closing the Big Gaps YIFITH the passing of another world series it might he time to ask this question what about the two pennant races next year? What has 1952 to offer? In the National League there are only two clubs who should again stand out. They are the Giants and Dodgers. And the Giants will have to duck another eleven-gam- e losing streak or sinking spell. The other six clubs are from 16 to 33 games away from the top. j ton (D., Tenn.) tells Capitol newsmen bow he downed an armed thug with one punch after the gunman accosted him in an alley near the hpme of a friend he was visiting. When he returned with police the thug was gone. Thats a SAVES CHILDREN, DIES . . . Firemen lower a basket containing body of Mrs. Irma Randall, 35, a Brooklyn mother who died in flames after she had rescued four of her nine children. The mother was at home with the four youngsters when the fire broke out and spread quickly up to their apartment 50 feet above the ground. A crowd held a blanket and the mother tossed the children into it. All landed safely, but after the rescue Mrs. Randalls body lay across the burning window sill. RED RETURNED . . . Gus Hall, fugitive national secretary of the U. 8. Communist party who jumped bail to escape prison, was arrested by Mexican secret service agents near Mexico City, and is being deported back to the United States. Is Big Business in U.S. and a matching set of hunting shirt, cap, pants and packs for the largest doe. Here is the official invitation to deer hunters of the east as appearing on page one of the Jaycee booklet: Deer Hunter: "On behalf of the City of Old Town it is a pleasure to extend to you an invitation to make Old Town your hunting headquarters. For many generations the Penobscot Indians found happy hunting in this area and their Reservation is located here now an interesting spot to visit. For many years this area has registered the greatest deer kill in the State of Maine. "Within a short drive you will find more hunting camps and more good hunting than in any other equal area in the state. Our people make their living largely by employment in our many Industries, which draw their raw materials from the nearby forests. As a result this area not only supplies sport for you but enables our citizens to earn their livelihood. Please be carefu' with cigarettes and fire. Come and enjoy your Hunting Breakfast sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Enjoy the excellent hunting. Enjoy yourself to the limit. Get a big buck but, please, be sure before you shoot. Theres not a deer hunter in the that wouldnt appreciate an invitation like that. And many of them in the east will take advantage of it, bringing to Main Street of Old Town a flood of new money. This is another example of a home town taking advantage of its own possibilities and promoting them. The same thing could be done by towns located In the great pheasant hunting areas of the west, communities located along the great midwest flyway used for centuries by duck and geese in the migrations, by communities located on lakes and streams where there is excellent fishing. But even without promoting outside hunting interest, Main Street businessmen could stimulate hunting among local residents as the fall season gets into full swing. Hunting, like fishing, is big business in every part of the nation. nation Fire Prevention Is factories, institutions, governmental facilities and so on. During the week of November aelourophiles (cat lovers) will celebrate National Cat Week. The week is sponsored by the American Feline Society, Inc., and its chief purpose is to alleviate abuse of cats, offer protection, food, medical 1950. it can. Robin Roberts had another big season, so the entire answer certainly wasn't pitching. The Cardinals finished a trifle stronger than the others, but their play against the Dodgers was entirely too sour to have them rank close to Chuck Dressens squad. I cant see much hope for the Reds, Cubs and Pirates. They have so many wide-ope- n gaps that filling half of them would be a big job. The American League would have been far better if it hadnt been for the near collapse of the Tigers and even older next season. There are few young fellows on the club coming along. And what will the Red Sox use for , menacing the leaders. The National League race should be another battle. The Dodgers have too many good minor leaguers to be too far away. The Giants will be just as good next year. The Cardinals look to have some promise with young pitchers hanging around to help. I cant see much hope for the Pirates, Cubs, Reds and Braves. Spahn is no longer a kid. It takes quite an imagination to figure clubs from 18 to 25 games off the pace closing this heavy gap within a year or two. The prospect for a close race in the National League is poor. This league has too many second-divisio- n clubs. Too few teams. You don't rebuild second-divisioteams into pennant winners overnight. There are too few major league ballplayers around to plug up too many open gaps. . . Korean war veteran, SSgt. Thomas Davies, Dover, N. J., who was felled by frostbite last winter in Korea, looks out from a cold chamber at Brooklyn navy yard as he tests navy - developed uniform for the coldest temperatures. E The White Sox will improve. They can be dangerous. The Athletics, who played better than .500 ball the last five weeks will be much tougher. Jimmy Dykes turned in a fine job. Vossen limed and fertilized the oat field with plant food carrying nitrogen, phosphate and potash before he seeded it. He keeps the field in oats two years, then seeds down to an alfalfa crop. He takes hay and pasture off as long as the stand is productive. He helps lengthen its .life by regularly with manure. The use of lime and fertilizer pays off in much bigger hay yields, Vossen reports. He harvested eight tons of hay on two acres that used to produce about one-ha- lf ton of timothy. Total Feed Supply Will Be Higher Than Last Year With the approach of the 1951-5- 2 feeding season, livestock feeders will be interested to know that thei expected total supply of feed grains and concentrates will be greater than last year, according to the bureau of agricultural economics. The available supply of feed wilt permit livestock to be fed at about the same rate per unit as last season. The number of animals to be fed, however, is also expected to be greater. An estimated 174 million animals will be on hand as compared with last years 168 mil- lion. A larger acreage and a fair carryover is expected to provide a larger corn supply. About 4 billion bushels is expected to be available for the 1951-5- 2 season. The total supply of corn, oats, grain sorghums, and barley for the coming season is estimated to be 127.1 million tons. This compares with last seasons total of 125 million tons of grain. The department reported total crop production may be the second highest in history in 1951. Battle of the Boroughs WARNS CN ATOMIC RACE . . . Rep. Henry Jackson, Washington, warns that intelligence reports reveal that Russia is making an all-oeffort to surpass the U. S. in atomic weapons. In addition 54,000 chain and Independent druggists sell both medical and sanitary supplies for cats. According to the U. S. Department of Commerce chain and independent food outlets sell $4,000. 000 in cat food alone annually. There are thousands of grocers in the home towns of America who have found a cat one of his best investments. Canneries, distilleries, food processing and other plants, constantly fighting rodent infestation, more than willingly maintain cats on their payroll. Even the United States government makes annual appropriations for the maintenance of cats in the post office, printing and engraving and other departments. f Lime, Fertilizer Pays Off in High Hay Yield cant all be charged to Curt Simmons, although part of n tems including defective chimneys and flues, and defective stoves, furnaces, and pipes; carelessness in disposal of hot ashes; sparks falling on roofs; faulty electrical wiring and appliances; and quickening fires with kerosene or gas- Heading the list of fire causes is the careless use of matches and smoking habits, faulty heating sys BRITISH OIL WORKERS QtlT ABADAN . . . Farm property loss due to fires amounted to in 1950, with 90 per cent of the total due to blazes which originated from carelessness of some $102,-000,0- from White Sox. The White Sox looked like pennant contenders up through June. Then not even Paul Richards could keep them aloft any longer. The Tigers simply didnt have it. Art Houtteman's loss didnt help anyway, but there were other flaws that Red Rolfe couldnt cure. Ton can be sure that Cleveland will start tbe 1952 race with the best pitching staff. The Yankees will be next. The Red Sox cause looks almost hopeless. An old team got much older down the stretch. It will be Pet Feeding and Care The business of feeding and caring for pets has become big business in the United States. At the top of the list, of course, is the dog. But a close second is the cat, of which there are about 21,000,000 in the country. At least 50 per cent of them are cared for by Individual owners, or are attached to stores, killing margin to wipe out in one season. Or two seasons. Tractor Drawbar The Battle of the Boroughs, meaning New York and Brooklyn, was the past seasons greatest feature. The old game has never seen more dramatic openings, looking as far back as early August. On August 11, Leo Durochers harassed and almost hopeless young men were 13(4 games back of the Dodgers. Thats an old story. But in the next 50 days the Giants won 37 out of their last 44 games for the incredible percentage of .841. This was far beyond the pace the Boston Braves of 1914 set. If these Braves were the Miracle Team, the Giants are the Double Miracle Team. This stretch of the Giants, led by the hustling Leo Durocher and supported by his entire squad, will never be forgotten. It stands alone against a team rated in August as one of, the greatest in National League history. What about the Dodgers? They had been front runners most of the year. Suddenly on Saurday, September 29, they were in second .place. The Giants had won the afternoon game. The Dodgers were now the pursuers. They moved up even again. On Sunday, September 30, the Dodgers were in second place for an hour or so. The Dodgers were trailing 6 to 1. then 8 to 5. Only brilliant defensive play by Pafko and Robinson saved their weary hides. Only Robinsons winning home run pulled them through as both teams on Monday marched into Brooklyn, the beleaguered city. A heavy piece of angle iron bolted to the rear of a tractor and extending well beyond the wheels makes harrowing easier fastening the harrow with a long chain hitch, especially when making turns at ends of the field. Bolted to the drawbar it can be removed when not in use. Iowa Tests Show Value Of Alfalfa for Swine knows Everyone that alfalfa pasture is good for hogs. But Just how good? The Iowa experiment station thought that one way to find out would be to feed one batch of hogs on dry lot; and another on alfalfa. They found that the biggest value in alfalfa comes from a saving in high-coprotein and mineral supplement Hogs gained faster on alfalfa. |
