Daimler 2912 Street, Santa Ana, Four years of drought takes toll on pheasants result in Four years of drought will likely Utahs when for hunters fewer pheasants 2002 ring neckef pheasant hunt kicks off Nov. 2. The pheasant hunt is Utahs most popular game bird hunt. Utahs 2002 quail season also begins Nov. 2. California quail numbers bhould be similar to last year, but Gambels quail numbers w ill be down. Despite the fact that pheasant populations have declined considerably over the past 35 years, Utahs most popular game bird hunt is still for the wily ringneck! This year some 25,000 to 35,000 hunters are again expected to be afield for pheasants. Hunters will see fewer birds this year than in 2001. Four years of drought has taken its toll on pheasants, as it has on other upland game birds. Do not expect the 2002 pheasant hunt to compare with the heyday of pheasant hunting in Utah. Tbo much habitat has been lost or degraded. DWR biologists are anxious to work with landowners who desire to improve and enhance pheasant habitat on private property. Funds are available through the Utah Wildlife Habitat Conservation Program for habitat and public access payments to landowners who want to get involved. Please contact the DWR Regional Habitat Manager in your area for more details. Pheasant hunting strategies in Utah are fairly different than in the past. Most of the best habitat for pheasants is still found on private lands throughout the state. However, hunters can no longer expect to go afield and have access to private lands on opening morning without talking with the landowner. Hunters need to invest some time ahead of the pheasant season opener to secure permission on private lands they desire to hunt. Hunters on lands that are cultivated" or that have been properly posted as No Trespassing" must have written permission from the landowner or person in charge to be there. This also applies to family members who are not the actual 1 California 92705-58Shalom landowner or person in charge of the land.
