Second place honors went to The BBs, notably Bob and Bridget Phillips of Moab, who lost only to Hansen and Nash. Teams from Salt Lake City, Denver and Durango finished further down the ranks. The main event was a seven-roun- d, nationally rated tournament, held at the and directed by Mary Nelson of Craig, Colo. Top honors and the $250 first prize went to Robert Fordon of Grand Junction, a life master and former Colorado State Champion, who retired" from tournament chess five years ago to do more camping and photography on the Colorado Plateau. With six victories and one draw, he proved he hadnt forgotten a thing about chess, and capably defeated second-plac- e finisher Michael Munafo of Denver in the sixth MARC round. Munafo, a sophomore who has been posting excellent tournament results in the Colorado Front Range, finished with six wins and one loss. Third place high-scho- ol went to Arthur Maxwell of Sandy, who played far above his rating level. Two Moab players finished in the money. Jay Stocks, at was the highest finishing 4-- 3, non-traditioi- manner. Avery Taylor, at 3.5, had the best score of anyone rated under 1000, and also earned a $50 prize. Moabs Damian Nash, seeded Becond in the tournament, finished out of the money at 4.5 points; two of his opponents won upset prizes for their games against him, including Janice Chen of Salt Lake City who held him to a draw in a dramatic round 6 game, inspiring the applause of 20 spectators. Nash bounced back to tie for first with Michael Munafo r Moab Random in the Chess tournament, held Saturday evening ailer the main tournament. This variant of chess, developed by Moab player E. Paul Cane, begins with all the pawns in their usual second rank formation, while players take turns setting up their other pieces anywhere on their first rank - or setting up their opponents pieces. Then all the normal rules of chess apply. The random starting position, however, leads to highly unusual games that are unfamiliar to experienced tournament players, and restores a sense of freshness to the game. This tournament concludes the springsummer chess events in Moab. In the fall there are three events planned, starting with the Four Corners Team Championships on Sept.r 14, and concluding with the U.S. National Championships on Nov. There will also be tournament for the a warm-uU.S. Championships on Oct. Meanwhile, many Moab players will be competing in the Utah Championships on For more informaAug. tion about these tournaments and others, visit www. utahchess. com, or visit the Moab Chess Club for friendly games every Friday from p.m. at the MARC. 12. 24-2- 0 first-eve- artists rt Redstone EXPOS, 22.
