In an effort to revitalize the Moab Farmers Market, the Youth Garden Project (YGP), along with other growers and local agriculture advocates, held meetings this past April and was hosted at the YGP site, which lies on Grand County School District property. For 2002, YGP Event Coordinator Michelle Wiley wants venI want to dors to collaborate, cooperative effort by Moab and Castle Valley farmers and by the Youth Garden Project, respectively. In 2000, Julie Fox, owner of Eckleeticafe, was the Farmers Market organizer and held it at her Main Street business. YGP was passed the torch again in 2000 where the market venue implement what other people want for the Moab Farmers Market. I certainly never would have YGP offers summer day camp offerThis summer will be the Youth Garden Projects second year cost For $100 per week-th- e ing Summer Day Camp for kids ages are treated to games and educabeing comparable to day care-kid- s tional activities centered around gardening, crafts such as paper making and stained glass creations, and harvesting watermelon, tomatoes, and cucumbers from the garden for snacks. Certified instructors will teach swimming lessons three mornings per week at the city pool 1. and instructional art and movement classes will be taught at the MARC two afternoons per week. The exploration of natural areas around town, including the Mill Creek swimming area, is in the schedule, as well. Professional staff will supervise kids in a relaxed and healthy setting. Does this sound cool? Well, it gets even cooler. If this sounds fun to you, but your cash flow parallels Mill Creeks flow this year, dont fret: financial aid is May to voice concerns and opinions about how to draw more buyers and vendors to the com- munity event. It was agreed upon by those in attendance of the May Farmers Market meeting that a large draw for vendors is to allow value added agricultural items to be sold. d agriculture constitutes any item that is created from agricultural products (i.e., canned tomatoes, jam, herbed vinegar, baked goods). With the 2001 market site located on school district property, selling ever-popul- Value-adde- value added items was not permitted, since it was zoned However, with the 2002 Farmers Market located commercially, the selling of value-adde- d items will be permitted. Farmers Markets often become the social event of a Saturday morning when youre able to buy a cup of coffee or a baked good, browse what vendors have for sale and stop and talk with friends while live music is playing, said Sarah Heffron, market vendor. Having the Moab Farmers Market on the West Center Street property is not a new idea. The Moab Farmers Market was organized from 1995 through 1997 by the now defunct Shojin Farms (also owned by Petty) and held at the West Center Street location. In 1998 and 1999, the West Center Street market was run as a available.
