In defense of nature photographer Dear Sam. I am a native of Mi mb and a homeowner in Grand County I am also a close personal friend of Michael Fatali and have known him for over 11 years, I would like to voice my supjinrt for Michael concerning the alleged damaging of Delicate Arch. Michael i a highly gifted young artist of very high personal and artistic integrity The negative and publicity he has received seems unfair. He has readily admitted hi part in the one-sid- ed Salt Hard times incident, which was NOT an act of vandalism. His honesty and cooperation since this incident can only be admired. Perhaps we should give more thought to whether the charges really fit the crime in this case. Surely huge fines and prison time are not indicated. I had been a photographer for many years and like any fam.ly man, I had taken thousands of family pictures. We had seen Michael image in his Npnngdale Gallery and like most, we were in awe of hi natural genius I was somew hat appro hensive about inparticipating m a workshop because of my experience with sl.de photography From our very f.r-- t contact, I knew Michael to he a very warm, caring and considerate individual, Quick to laugh and to instantly put you at eae. I knew too, that he was a true professional with an obvious and very vocal love for the land. Th. rough. out the workshop. Michael was by our side constantly encouraging us to be mmdf d of the fragile landeapes that we were photographing He he!ped us ad to see and appreoate the beauty that might not be so obvious to our untrained eve. He coached us to show couflesy point-and-sho- -- and to have respect for the natural earth and all of it beauty He forged a bond with each of us and we grew to love and respect this man who is so much more than a mere photographer. In one short week, he taught me lessons of a Lfetime Making image & what Michael doe, but more importantly is that he wrote about his image and hi writing can touch your heart a much a what you see. Taking photographs is primarily a mechanical process, but writing about w hat you have composed through the lena must come from your heart Michael wrote of the earth as he would his mother with love and kindness, with a posMon to protect and to preserve He imparts that passion to all those aroursd him, his love Sr that which he capture on oi I c I s.i worse- I - 1 , - tilde for even the smallest things r N am Eltatigiirre amA PRE-CHRISTMA- FURNITURE Q:7 S IT O' Alter Thanksgiving Specials Throughout the Store! At one point he wa setting up hi tripod and one of the leg wa balanced against a side rnrk w all. Michael was so concerned the metal tip of hn tnpod leg might make a mark on the rock that he disassembled the setup and reversed the leg to it ruhher end. Doe thi sound like someone who would intentionally damage Delicate Arch? We were in a remote canyon that I'm guessing less than 50 people have ever seen yet he wa intent on keeping it pristine appearance just as he found it! I cannot believe that the government of the United State i going to take this man to court over what w a obviously an accident (which left NO lasting damage). Jerome L. Klinger, D VM Sedona, Anz r- -t -- .u Can't believe government is taking Fatali to court Dear Editor, In August of 2000 I had the privilege to take an Arizona Highway photo workshop given by Michael Fatali Aside of this being the best photo teaching experience of a lifetime, I made a new fnend In the 15 months since the seminar, I have had the opportunity to visit Michael in Utah and photograph with him on three separate occasions I would like to make a few points here that have allowed me to learn more about who Michael is and what he represents First, Michael sole goal with his photography is to (reserve for future generations the beauty of nature. ! le realizes that this beauty l slow ly being taken from us. in port by nature here If and in part by mankind. In either ca.-- his wonderful image photographs will allow this beauty to he seen by many people virtually forever Second, a little insight into who Michael is and w hat he represent he has been accused of att - n pt it g a He f 'it v w f n I made m f I r ai bed a w h r It el i.i m t.is.l to mg away '.u ur.l , -t ctiiM.se hefweirt spnd i.g that ft nie broke w hi h would h ve udiatu.g n'he we kend 1 h Id out t .r sev r il mike hut a lo boor I fast oath wet k r.d proved to U t.M, m . h f r Sient the VI r.ls on a quart of mi k i if of dark bread and took the f h tnge iri i h ,, hi have he Id out longer hut 1 w aki ried w hi n ru . n li k a dran, .f.i birr, f r th tM .tra.n. in 'lire alra.iy I Dress Up Your Home for the Holidays with Quality Furniture from Knowles Home Furnishings Electronic Items Add a Lot at Christmas time! k And, We Deliver J Right to Your Home j And it is not too early to or Christmas Lay-Awa- y have other options for financing on Approved Credit We Elm is proume. My wife and I are heartbroken at the insensitive way in which Michael ha been portrayed in the media. The incredibly negative stones have had a crushing effect on his family as well. Those in authonty have the responsibility to determine the facts and to render decisions. The rest of us might do well to support a generous member of our community One who ha g.ven u all so much pleasure by hi beautiful images of our sacred land. Dan and Aleen McGuire Roeknlle, Utah 1 |
