For many years thereafter, the l.acy family talked about it and the names in the rocks. Then in 1984 I)r. Lacy and his father Claude located the site after 35 years. Still there after all these years was part of the camp site that Butch Cassidy, Etta Place McMullin and other gang members spent the winter of 1897 complete with artifacts. It was like a time capsule, Dr. Lacy went on to say. I will bet that only a half dozen people know where this is at and that it was used as a hide out. In the new book it tells that Butch Cassidy did not rob the Castle Gate Mine payroll in 1897, that John Herring and Joe Walker who were killed in 1898 a wealth of information, and she was smart enough to preserve this later history of her father and Butch, Dr. Lacy said. Bob Cazier of the Deseret News said, the book tells of Cassidy mentor, Matt Warner who became one of the Wests most notorious bandits and helped teach Butch Cassidy how to rob banks. Dr. Steve Lacy said, This has been a love of my life, to bring history to life. I hope whoever picks it up, it will be like opening a trunk, coming across photos ( 160 of them) and clippings. The fire was quickly snuffed out by by standers who grabbed a garden hose, and by Moab Valley Fire Department firefighters who arrived on scene within two minutes. Approximately $300 in miscellaneous items stored in the shed were damaged. Most of the heat and flame remained inside the shed, the restaurant itself was unharmed. On Tuesday, Fire Chief Corky Brewer said at this point in his investigation, he sees no connection between Mondays fire and a blaze two and a half years ago restaurant. That fire, which also began in an exterior shed, was ruled to have been set by human hands, though the investigation did not turn up enough evidence to charge anyone with arson. Evidence of accelerant was found among the ashes of the Feb. 27, 1999 Branding Iron fire. Brewer said no evidence of accelerant was found in Mondays fire. Basically, what we have is a fire that we cannot find a cause of," Brewer said. With no evidence indicating what started the fire, the cause of the fire is currently being ruled unknown." Theyve pinpointed the point of origin of the blaze, Brewer said, theres just no smoking match. Brewer said despite the previous fire at the Branding Iron, so far, nothing points to them being related, at all. And, in comparing the two fires, he adds, the thing that strikes him the most are the dissimilarity in the times: the blaze two years ago occurred in the wee hours of the morning while Monday's blaze happened at 1:30 in the afternoon. Det. Steve White with the Grand County Sheriffs Office is assisting in the investigation. Tuesday afternoon, after returning from the scene of the fire, he said there was little go on. He noted that the suspects in the fire two years ago moved from the area some time ago. Were interviewing some people that were possibly in the area that might have seen something, Brewer said. On Tuesday, investigators had interviewed one individual, two others were slated to be interviewed soon. Film Commission verifies position as the longest running organization of its kind in the world As determined through the Association of Film Commissioners International, the Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission is the longest ongoing film commission in the world. Established in 1949 as the Moab Movie Committee by founder George White, it has changed its name several times but never its ultimate goal of recruiting and developing the film industry in south- eastern Utah. The first movie filmed in the Moab area was Wagonmaster, directed by John Ford, starring Ward Bond, Ben Johnson, Harry Carey, Jr., and Joanne Dru. Ford selected Professor Valley as his key location for the film and it has been referred to as John Ford ( ountry since that time. The George White Ranch on the banks of the Colorado River, where the canyon opens up into frofessor Valley, was the key location for several movies. One of the most memorable was Rio Grande, another Ford picture taring John Wayne and Maureen OHara. George White passed away Dec. 30, 2000 at age 94. The White Ranch is presently owned by Colin Fryer and is called Red Cliff Ranch. Fryer is building an adventure lodge and this is where the Moab to Monument Valley Film and During the month of November the Dan O'Laurie Canyon Country Museum will have a special exhibit highlighting the movies made in Moab and giving an example of the process using Riders of the Purple Sage. Bette Stanton, former head of the Moab to Monument Valley Film Commission is pictured by the museums permanent film exhibit. Movie Museum will be housed. The lodge is scheduled to open in the early spring of 2002. This special display is a sample of the memorabilia that will be shown at the museum. Other movies filmed at the ranch include: Cheyenne Autumn, Boarder River, Ten Who Dared, Golf of the Seven Saints, Warlock and Rio Conchos.
