The immediate consequences for children exposed to violence often show up in school as poor concentration and thinking problems. These children may be anxious and fidgety. They may have poor problem solving skills. They may escalate conflicts rather than be able to resolve them. They may be tired and irritable as a result of a sleep problem. Children are not as good at expressing problems in words as they are at expressing problems with behaviors Similar symptoms in children may have very different causes. Treatment that is effective depends upon proper diagnosis. A professional attempting to establish a treatable diagnosis to explain the symptoms relics on the parent to describe the home environment that is affecting the child. A mother who has been hit may not believe that her foreshortened sense of their future and a tendency to avoid thinking or talking about their childhood. They may have a restricted range of emotion and a sense of detachment from others.
