Utah Farm Bureau CEO C, Booth Wallentine explained to the committee the need for Extension to assist production agriculture in maintaining its $3 billion contribution to Utah's economy. He also cited agribusiness as one of the state's fastest growing industries. "Agriculture and agribusiness need the experiment station as never before to turn out cutting-edgresearch so we can continue to compete in the global economy he said. With the research, we must have USU Extension programs as the delivery system to get the information and the technical assistance to the 15,000 farms and ranches in Utah." Extension agents and experiment stations are located throughout Utah, serving a myriad of entities, including urban and rural communities, youth-at-risprograms, e k 4-- and agriculture. As the state has shot up, additional population programs and research have been implemented all with little to no increased budget funds, according to Extension administrators. In addition to restoring last years $50,000 cut in travel expenses, Extension is also looking for funds to replace old vehicles and increase field agent salaries to stay competitive with neighboring states. Extension personnel did not benefit directly from last years tuition increase at USU; instead. Extension administrators had to pass on the increase out of their own declining budget. Finally, growth needs, horse and water quality programs, and a statewide hiring freeze are also concerns in desperate need of remedy, according to Extension and Farm Bureau representatives. Paul Rasmussen, Director of the Utah Agriculture Experiment Station, said there has not been a funding increase for the experiment stations operating budget in 15 years.
