J i Want to hunt a black bear? applications are available Applications for permits to hunt black bears during Utahs 2001 spring and fall seasons are now available. Hunters who have applied for a black bear permit any year since 1993 should have received a preprinted application in the mail by Feb. 5. Beginning on that day, hunters also may obtain applications from hunting and fishing license agents statewide; Division of Wildlife Resources offices in Ogden, Salt Lake City, Springville, Vernal, Price and Cedar City; the Lee Kay Center for Hunter Education in Salt Lake City and the Cache Valley Hunter Education Center in Logan; and the Division's Internet web site at www. nr. state, ut. usdwrdwr. htm For the first time, hunters can apply online for a bear hunting Wildlife Resources, says an struction sheet to help hunters complete their application correctly will be included with the preprinted applications. Read through it completely, before filling out your application, she advises. Hunters are also encouraged to mail their application early. By mailing your application early, youre giving it plenty of time to arrive before the 5 p.m., March 7 cutoff date, Tutorow said, Tutorow reminds hunters that they must specify whether they want a limited entry bear permit, or a limited entry bear archery permit, by checking the correct box on their application. Applications w ill be rejected if a box isnt permit by visiting the divisions web site. Once on the site, click on the icon at the top of the home page that says Black Bear Permits, Click Here To Apply Online. The icon will be posted on the page. To be included in the draw for hunting permits, applications must be received no later than 5 p.m., March 7. For the first time since 1992, spring bear hunting opportunities await Utahs hunters with spring hunts offered on the Nine Mile, Creek; La Sal Anthro-Rang- e Mountains; Wasatch Mountains, West; and Wasatch Mountains, units Currant this year. The spring hunts will run April 14 - May 21. Fall hunting w ill not be allowed on units open to spring hunting and spring hunters must attend an orientation course that will stress the importance of not taking female bears. Season dates on the 15 units open to fall hunting are Aug. 25 Creek-Avintaqui- in- n -- Sept. 30 and Nov. 1 - 29. Judi Tutorow, wildlife licensing coordinator for the Division of checked. Tutorow also encourages hunters to obtain written permission from landowners before applying for a hunt that occurs on private land. Written permission is required to hunt private property and we encourage hunters to obtain it before applying, she said. We dont w ant hunters to draw a permit and then find they cant use it because landowners wont give them permission to hunt the area." The division doesnt have a list of people who own land where black bear hunts occur, so hunters need to take time to locate the landowners. Less than 25 percent of Utahs black bear hunts occur on private property. Hunts that do occur on private property are indicated by an asterisk in the 2001 Utah Black Bear Proclamation. Results of the 2001 Utah Black Bear draw will be posted by April 6. For more information call Utah Wildlife Administrative Services at the nearest Division of Wildlife Resources office or the Divisions Salt Lake City office at (801) 538-470- 0.
