The Glen Canyon Action Network, based in Moab, on Wednesday was set to mi ke new demands of the Bureau of Reclamation at a public hearing called to discuss the fate of Flaming Green the on located Dam Gorge River in northeastern ETtah. The group said it expected to ask The Bureau to expand its approach to environmental review of critical fish habitat and to undertake a comprehensive study of all its activities in the Colorado River watershed. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service findings that the Flaming Gorge Dam harms endangered native fish species recently caused The Bureau to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement on operations of Flaming Gorge Dam. The Glen Canyon Action Network coalition wiB try to argi e that since Flaming Gorge Dam is part of a larger system and has impacted endangered species all the way to the Gulf of California, neither Flaming Gorge, nor the other dams in the system, can be looked at in isolation. The coalition is also demanding that the Bureau evaluate the possibility of decommissioning Flaming Gorge Dam. They claim the Flaming Gorge Reservoir does not directly serve any major populations; its storage capacity is used primarily to regulate Rows for other reservoirs downstream. The coalition also says the dams 150 megawatts of hydroelectric power generation capacity are relatively insignificant when compared to the 500 MW recently from Dams Glen Canyon operations in effort address to an endangered species problems in the Grand Cam on. But prior to Wednesdays meeting, the Bureau was saying it would not discus the issue of decommissioning the dam. The Bureau was billing the public hearing as a "scoping" meeting to obtain public input on issues that should be addressed in its study. The Bureau is violating the spirit of the scoping process and the intent of the National Environmental Policy Act, said Brian oy Dunkiel, staff attorney with Friends of the Earth in Burlington, Vermont, which is part of the coalition. "Dam decommissioning is being supported by the Army Corps of Engineers, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and a number of state agencies as a means to recover endangered species. The Bureau has a legal obligation to consider this as a reasonable and scientifically defensible alternative for endangered fish recovery on the Green River and throughout the Colorado River basin." Other issues the coalition is calling on the Bureau to address include: the need to eliminate predatory fish species introduced into the been have that need to eliminate the watershed, water quality impacts associated with motorboat and personal watercraft use on Flaming Gorge Reservoir; and the need to eliminate impacts of Flaming Gorge Dams operation on park resources in Dinosaur National Monument, and ensure compliance with the National Park Service Organic Act. non-nativ- e co-st- ar (Dtero pictures you would like published?
