CACHE COUNTY, UTAH CACHE AMERICAN Four Crookston Has His Day In Court No one ever went to a wrestling match or a high class vaudeville and got a greater kick out of it those patrons of Judge M. C. Harris' court received this morn lng at the trial of Logan City versus Robert Crookston. It was a case on appeal from the city court and the defendant was charg- ed with possession of a quarter pint of gin. At the conclusion of the testi- - j mony, Judge Harris submitted the cast and took it under advise- ment. Attorney Leon Fonnesbetk represented Logan city and At- torney L. E. Nelson represented the defendant. Tlie whole testimony of thede- fendant was to show that "bad blood existed between himself and Chief Carl Poulter, the chief com-thplaining witness. Other witnesses for the city were James A Smith and Thomas Davidson. The history of the case may be of Interest to our readers in as much as Mr. Crookston is a period leal contributor to the columns of this paper. It appears from the evidence that on the 20th day of an Sego Milk Pays Nearly A Million and A Half Dollars A Year for Milk, Wages and Supplies in Cache Valley Here are interesting facts about the Sego Milk plant at Richmond, to help illustrate what its operation means to the people of this section: more than $1,000,000.00 annually to dairymen of Cache Valley for milk and cream. SEGO MILK PRODUCTS Since 1903 CO. a Cache Valley Payroll Builder of tins year, Robert was seen asleep in his car n. ar his home cn First South street. The word reached the ears of the chief who lives only a lew diors away. He sent his boy to investigate and the story came ta(.k that Mr crookston was there and appeared to be asleep, The chief calls up Mr. Smith and Mr. Davidson, feeling that he didn't want to make the arrest alone because he feared Bob might shoot me with a .45 calibre revolver. Anyway the other officers came. They awakened Bob, got him out of his car and the chief discovered a quarter pint of gin in the car. The witnesses for the city all testified that Crookston appeared to be intoxicated. When Crookston took the stand, he attempted to show that "bad blood existed between himself and the chief because the Crookstons had at one time attempted to quell the children of the Poulter family from causing disturbances about the neighborhood by shooting .22 rifles at small birds and blowing musical instruments. Crookston contended that he had been to the cemetery on the anniversary of the death of his wife. He was feeling badly and had taken tablets that had caused him to sleep. When he returned home a load of hay was parked In front of his driveway so he stopped along the curb, awaiting the removal of the loaded truck. While he was waiting he went to sleep and It was at this juncture that he was apprehended by the Chief. The attorney for Crookston tried to show that the chief should have taken Mr. Crookston to his home as a true peace officer should do, Instead of trying to build up a case against a citizen who had caused no disturbance of any kind, who was found near his own home, sleeping In his owm car. There were numerous character witnesses on hand to give Mr. Crookston a clean bill of health, including George D. Harding, of the Logan city schools, W. W. Hall, former county commissioner, and 'William Knowles, former detective for the Short Line and a neighbor. One of the high spots In the trial of the case was the questioning of the chief of police by the defendant. Mr. Crookston wanted to know if the case was not brought because of spite and hatred. This the chief denied. Crookston brought out the fact that he had offered Judge Jesse P. Rich a $25 fine because of the Incident but the city judge would not take the money until he consulted the chief. The latter defendant refused and said the would have to stand trial. There were a great many unpleasantries passed between Crookston and the chief because of Crookstons attentions to a certain widow. Crookston contended It was because the chief was jealous. Crookston said he was refused Judge a jury in the city court. 1 Hams told him he hoped the dis-trict court would not be so ac-- ! said cused. Then the defendant he believed he would get a square deal ln the district court. C rocLston Cache Produce 375 Comp imy North Main.
