Their place of business is kept neat and clean and is made attractive with a very nicely arranged stock of merchandise. A fountain service is conducted along with their line of toothsome candles. Tables are also a port of the service where luncheons are served st all hours of the day. Mr. and Mrs. Merrill are always glad to have their Logan, Richmond and Cache county friends give them a call while at Preston. They still remember their old town and are boosters for the annual Black and White day show. IN CACHE VALLEY Naturally one of the first Industries In a newly settled district is that of building homes and bams, bridges, fences, etc. for the convenience of the settlers. Into the early history cf Cache Valley's settlement, among others, came one Christian H. Monson, a man who had learned well his trade as a carpenter and builder in his native land Norway. He first resided in Logan and there became known as one of the prcmlnent building contractors of Cache Valley. He taught many young men, besides his own boys, the building trades and supervised the construction of a great number of the better buildings in this section. Many of these still stand as mute, yet concrete evidence of the skill and honest workmanship of the builder. Of the many such buildings, still giving good service, might be mentioned such as the old Co-o- p Store Building in Logan, at the time cf it's buildone of the largest of it's ing. kind in the Territory of Utah, r.cw known as the First National Bank Building. The Old Richp mond " store intiWirg by the Theurer Mercantile Co., at Richmond, and many others tco numerous to mention here. As the settlements grew farther north in the valley, Mr. Monson moved to Richmond, and, with hi3 boys, established the Monson Lumber and Building Industry. They operated one of the Pioneer saw and plaining mills of the territory In 1878, at a water power site on of Richmond, the hills north-ea- st where lumber was prepared, from timber hauled from nearby canyons, with which to build h.mes for the early settlers of the valley. Often they received a share of the lumber for their services as manufacturers and builders. Shortly after the advent of the railroad into Cache Valley, Mr. Monson bought a steam engine, and with this for his power, erected his mill on the south bank of City Creek in Richmond at a point just east of where the state crosses the creek.
