DUCHESNE COUNTY, UTAH, THURSDAY. DECEMBER 9, $3.00 PER YEAR - 7 1 1954 PER COPY A NEW LOOK Over $1,000 Raised For Newspaper Health Center Ai Banquet The Duchesne Health Center banquet, sponsored by the Duchesne stake and ward, was the most outstanding event of the year. The banquet was held at the Duchesne stake house on Thursday evening, and approximately 400 people turned out to help in this benefit and to enjoy the wonderful program and food that was prepared for them. The entire community can well be proud of the spirit in which everyone responded to this call for funds, to help on the building of the Health Center. Friends from surrounding communities are to be congratulated also on their support to this event, as everyone went overboard in every way to help out. Cooperation from all made this wonderful event the success it was. Up to date, there has been received $1017.00, with some funds still to come in. The program from the Kia Ora Club, from the B.Y.U. was outstanding and everyone enjoyed it very much. The Kia Ora Club is a group of native Maoris, returned L.D.S. missionaries, and others on the BYU campus who train throughout the school year in learning the native chants, dances and ceremonials of the Maori people. Their program is in full authentic native costumes which have been imported directly from New Zealand, and during the past four years have been the most popular of all BYU touring groups. They have toured extensively throughout most of the 11 western states and into Canada, presenting more than 300 programs since the time they were first organized. Among their program numbers are the Haka, the Maori war dance which has been handed down from generation to generaPoi tion for centuries; the the flight of dance, depicting birds; the "Stick Game, played to music, which is one of the favorite of all games among the Maoris and which is an intricate and skill game of coordination which always thrills the audience; dances of greetings; and dances which depict the voyage of their ancestors across the seas. The group was accompanied by Hawaiian students who are attending BYU, and they sang and danced Hawaiian numbers on the program. d The group dances are with special numbers featuring songs, dances and trick juggling, as done by the Maoris. The BYU group is the only group in America which performs the intricate and colorful dances of the Maori natives, and they have been acclaimed by audiences of all ages. They are led by Albert Wha-anga native prince of the Maori people, who is a senior student inter-sperce- a, Bishop D. G. Hunt Visits Basin Catholic Parishes Catholic Churches in the Uintah Basin were honored last weekend by having the Most Rev. Duane G. Hunt, bishop of the Salt Lake diocese, as their guest. While in Roosevelt he participated in the Sunday morning Masses, saying the one at 8:30, and making brief remarks during the other. Saturday night he was a house guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Coltharp at Hayden, and Sunday morning was guest of honor at a special breakfast at the Frontier Grill Cafe. Sunday afternoon Bishop Hunt officiated at a special ceremony at the St. James church in Vernal, when N. J. Meagher, prominent banker, was decorated with the Knighthood of St. Greagory The Great. This honor is bestowed on men of the Catholic Church for long and active service in the church and for individual accomplishments in civic and community activities. A reception and refreshments followed in the church hall, after which a dinner at the Hotel Vernal concluded the activities.
