The men are on their way to an Indian agency where they are to deliver the cattle In a government deal ol free beef to the Indians. Willie Is concerned over a possible uprising of the Kedskins but Terry reassures him that the people will be too happy to receive free meat to cause any trouble. Upon their arrival, however, they are met by a savage tribe which is subdued only when Terry speaks to them and shows them the error of their reasoning. Willie is annoyed at A1 Grlnnel and Buttons McTague, two of his men, who seem to challenge his authority. In order to avert trouble, he Ignores them. with CHAPTER n He did not look around until he was hitching his bronc at the rail in front of the Agency. Then he saw that Grinnel and McTague were riding toward one of the shacks which stood near the river slope. He knew well enough what that meant. Ail liquor sales would be halted while the Indians were on the post but there would certainly be places where thirsty cowhands could find illicit firewater. Obviously Grinnel had been serious when he announced his intention of remaining at Fort Hooker long enough for a celebration. Andrews frowned and let his glance travel across the mad scene before him. Indian excitement was rising to a high pitch. If Grinnel should go hog wild in all this bedlam there would be plenty of trouble for everybody. Over by the river he could see Donovan shoving the ponies into a small corral. Too bad that the redhead had not been appointed straw boss; he wouldnt have taken any slack from A1 Grin- Andrews kept his eyes on the first group although a rapid succession of steers was coming out of the chute now, all of them being hunted down on the spot as the reservation Indians tried to recapture some of the glories of the chase which they had bargained away. Indian troubles were by no means a new idea to him but these men were talking about two angles which he had never consid- ered. Unfortunately, Willie had not run across such congenial company. When he entered the Agency he found almost as much confusion as he was leaving behind him. The nervous Indian Agent was bawling contradictory orders to a pair of civilian assistants while a cavalry lieutenant stood by grimly, his eyes cold as he watched proceedings. Everyone seemed to be quick tempered from the strain of having so many Indians around and Willie found himseif greeted with brusque impatience. The excitement around the corral was in full blast when Terry came out of the mess halL He could hear the yells of Indians and the bawling of tortured cattle punctuated by the staccato of gunfire. A pall of dust hung over everything, giving the impression of a battle being fought there on the plain. He could see nothing of Andrews, nor was there any sign' of action at the corral where the Bar-- 0 ponies were being kept under guard. Accordingly he turned toward the river, hopeful that he could get away from the turmoil and find a quiet spot down there. It was not until he was at the waters edge that he noticed a camp where drooping oxen browsed beside a wagon which was remarkable for the number and quality of its repairs. He saw that it had once been a Santa Fe Trail freighter; wheels told him its broad-tire- d that. Now it fairly bulged with additions and repairs. He could hear low voices on the far side of the vehicle and he walked across toward what seemed to be the camp, studying the remarkable wagon as he moved along. Finally he rounded the built-u- p rear of the old prairie schooner and came upon a tense little tableau. Two men faced a girl across a small cooking fire, the men obviously drunk and the girl just as obviously angry. Get out of here, both of you! she ordered. I want no trouble with drunks but Ill shoot if I have He didnt explain the use of the plural and Andrews did not ask. It was all too obvious that the man was in bad health, the stringy toughness of his old body in no way concealing the gaunt lines of disease. Suddenly Willie was not so anxious to sit here and chat. Some day his own wandering career might reach a point like this and he did not want to think about it He went back into the front room of the Agency only to find It deserted. The officials had moved out to the corral, ready to begin the work of Issuing steers to the Indians.
