Coal Ban Protested t coal operators of southeastern Utah have filed violent protests with the Salt Lake City commission over the recently adopted city ordinance prohibiting coal burning steam locomotives within the Salt Lake City limns. Utahn Forsees New Utah Oil Shales Valuable ; The oil shales of the Green River formation in Utah have the highest prospective economic value of any known deposits in the world, declares R A. Cattell, oil expert of Washington, D. C. Cattell further stated that the possible liquid fuel yield from the known reserves in the United States is at least 50 times the present annual consumption of 'petroleum. i The major problem of producing liquid fuel from Utah shale is that the richest of beds are far from large markets. Quarterly South America Bound Spotlighting Utah By Ray E. Colton Petroleum Geologist l AT this writing, the activities of the field petroleum industry, based on late field scout reports, indicates that while two active drillings are creating considerable interest among major and independents alike in the Vernal area of Uintah county, active .drillings and field geophysical exploration in the Valley rea of Duchesne county are creating equal interest in the petroleum industry. Field drilling reports as of August 12, 1947 show the following drilling in Uintah county, i Carter Oil Company, Tulsa, Oklahoma, Number 1, Knudson, location 6V2 miles west of Vernal, on U. S. Highway 40, is reported as making hole below a depth of 3,000 feet in the Uinta sandstone formation. The original scheduled depth of this well was estimated by company geologists as 5,800 to 6,000 feet, so ,the well is now being drilled the second half of the original .scheduled depth. If horizons encountered during the tinning of the remaining 3,000 feet or less jwarrant further drilling, the company will probably go to 8.000 feet as was its policy in Davis drilling the Carlcr-EdnNumber 1, which readied a depth 8,000 feet with some oil shows, before abandonment. The Vernal Oil and Gas Co.s Ulullinger Number 1, location 5 miles northwest of Vernal, Uin-tab county, in Dry Fork canyon, has reached a depth of 215 feet, according to the latest field wild-fcascout operation on this The well was temporarily a shutdown order for four days during the week of August 1947, but drilling is reported have been resumed.
