Carbon monoxide gas develops I when any fuel coal, wood, gas- i oline, or illuminating gas -- does not bum properly or completely. It cannot be seen, smelled or tasted. Its only warnings are headache and drowsiness. Yet it is in the air whenever there is motor traffic. The exhaust of a car, even one in good running condition, contains a concentration of 15 per cent of it. As little as 2 per cent in the air will poison, and 4 per cent will prov6 fatal. Statistics show, according to the National Bureau of Casualty and Surety Underwriters, that carbon monoxide from auto exhaust gases is the direct cause given in at least 700 deaths annually. No one knows nor can guess how many lives are lost indirectly through its influence. Fpr example, there is no telling how often that common driving occurrence, sleep at the wheel, has been induced by carbon monoxide. All motorists are familiar with the "headache and lassitude which often comes upon them while driving. These signs, coupled with the odors of exhaust fumes in a moving vehicle, are final warnings that carbon monoxide is present in lethal quantities. They should be more than sufficient notice to take the necessary measures against carbon monoxide poisoning. This means a regular checking of the exhaust mechanism and the carburetor action, keeping the vehicle well ventilated when driving, eliminating any leaks or holes which allow seepage from the motor or exhaust into the body of Coal, gas, stove, furnace and burner companies can give advice on precautions that will afford safety from this invisible The Plan makes it for us to give you the possible Rexall .tremendous savings which you get at our store. S. Department of Agristate officulture and cials in combating this disease which causes heavy losses annually to the cattle industry. About 40 per cent of 212,482 herds tested showed some ahimals with the disease. Approximately 13 per cent of more than 3,000,000 cattle given agglutination blood tests used in detecting the disease were found to be infected, according to Dr. A. E. Wight, chief of the tuberculosis eradication division, Bureau of Animal Industry, who is directing the special campaign against Bangs disease. His report covers the- - work of the fiscal year ended June 30, 1935. Cattle reacting to the tests are slaughtered, after which the cattle owner receives a federal indemnity payment. The testing, started in July, 1934, is well under way in all states except California and Wyoming. These states are expected to participate soon. Wisconsin leads in the number of herds tested. A total of 34,843 herds were tested in that state, 30,792 in Minnesota, 18,338 in Ohio, and 16,539 in Oregon. Demands for this work in many sections of the country were greater than anticipated and the cattle owners demonstrated their willingness' to cooperate and attempt to eliminate the disease, Dr. Wight said. After the diseased animals are slaughtered, the cattle owners clean and disinfect the premises where the cattle are kept. It is necessary to repeat tests to determine if any of the remaining cattle become infected after the first reactors are removed. Each herd In which infection is found receives four tests, but no herd receives more than two tests when the results are negative. Average appraisal of Bangs disease reactors during the past year was $56.86, average salvage received by the owner of such animal, $19.87, and average federal payment, $24.29. The maximum federal payment for grade cattle is $25 and for purebred animals $50. The owner receives the salvage, but the total payment from all sources must not be in excess of the appraised value. In Maine and Virginia the owner receives a state payment in addition to the federal payment. Federal funds are available for continuing the work until June 30, 1936. The number of herds tested in Utah total 2,480, of which 973 herds were pronounced reactors.
