The average legislator can readily from his visualize the kick-bac- k constituency. Some of these same legislators, however, are proposing to increase the three per cent sales tax, which during the period from 1920-2- 9 was levied on the mining industry of this state, I for during that decade, state I and local taxes on Utah mines, amounted to three cents for each dollar of gross value of ores produced. One proposal would increase this tax to 12 per cent of gross sales. How many of these same legislators could face their constituents at the close of the session, if they imposed such a confiscatory tax on their neighbors as they now propose to levy upon the mines. The recommendation of the committee of nine in this re- gard was that the taxation of metal mines should be changed from the present base of three times the annual net proceeds, to three times the average of the annual net proceeds for the preceding three years. It seems that this is about all the burden that should be imposed at this time upon this industry except its fair share of Utahs participation in the national program for social security, which is just recovering from the most critical period in its history. Hope springs eternal in the human breast, but it is equally certain that man likes to be frightened and relishes the thrill of menace around him. Else, why the interest with which he reads prophecies of world destruction, why the gusto with which forecasts of wars are swallowed, why the weight given to prophecies of economic upheaval and world-wrecki- ng in The here follows: Gitchie Manito (the Great Spirit) all things of earth, after which he rested many, many suns. He then returned to find that the men of earth, as in a previous earth time, were almost continually in trouble with one another and that now and then there were terrible wars. Something had to be done to stop the quarrels and wars. Some place had also to be set apart where all and everyone could live in peace, where all could live as brothers. He then spent many years traveling over the earth trying to better the condition of mankind. At last he chose the Catlinite ridge dt what is now Pipe Stone, Minnesota, where, in a previous earth age, the assembled nations of the world, in t battle, had stained the rocks red with their blood and had there all perished but three maidens (three large glacial boulders now at the site one of whom is alleged to have been the jealous woman in other versions) from which the present race of men sprang. Here he called all or the peoples and, when they had appeared This place before him, he said: shall always be sacred. It shall always be held and owned in common by all the people. It shall be neutral ground to all. Here all shall bury the tomahawk. Here there shall always be peace. In this region there shall be peace henceforward. The murmuring falls of the Winnewassa, here, shall be our witness. From the rocks, here, rocks which I have made sacred, you will make your pipes of long stem which you shall smoke at all gatherings as a pipe of peace, as I now fashion and smoke this one before you, using red willow bark as the tobacco to be smoked. To this place you shall make an annual pilgrimage and as often as you meet here you shall smoke the pipe of peace. We will also thus sun erect a shrine at the falls and when you come here I will speak to you through the murmuring cataclysm? The most reasonable answer to this question is that man likes such prophecies because of the joy that he derives from their failure. He is secretly confident of escape from whatever besets him, and, by that token, he likes to be tricked waters. For some reckless drivers, into believing that the peril Through the ages that came and Nations visited this Sunday is indeed a day of rest from which he will escape is went the Red and made and smoked their quarry of the direst. complete rest. pipes of peace. They also listened Has Many Fine Advantages. 1935 Models The story SAN FRANCISCO, Calif behind Chevrolets new turret top construction is one of great engineering genius and long experimentation on the part of Fisher Body Corporation, according to K. M. Chase, Pacific Coast regional manager for Chevrolet. Chevrolet Master De Luxe is the only car in its price class which features the turret tOD. For years there has been an acute top, said need for a truly Mr. Chase, but up until the time Fisher Body actively began laying out plans for such a construction very little successful work had been done. To be sure, there have been bodies on the various market, but all have neglected to completely encase the passenger compartments in steel as is the case with turret top. The rofmg panel on the Master De Luxe Chevrolet raises the safety factor against accident to as high as 50 per cent. Statistics show that in the case of many accidents serious injury has been due to the old type wood and cloth top construction. With turret top, however, this danger is greatly lessened as one sheet of seamless drawn steel runs from the cowl to the rear panel, covering the side panels as far down as the door sills. Top bows are also of all-ste- el all-ste- el steel, making turret top the strong-est, most protective top ever built into an automobile. But while safety was the primary motive back of turret top it has other benefits as well. Using this construction it is now possible to effectively streamline the entire upper half of the car by eliminating roof welts and mouldings. This greatly enhances the beauty of the car, giving it an unbroken line from front to rear bumper. Then, too, wet weather is no longer a menace as with 'turret top it is absolutely impossible for any water to leak through the roof. With turret top all body noise has been eliminated by laying, between the steel roof and headlining, felt a heavy piece of to absorb vibration. This is also true of the body floor, which is another single piece stamping heavily insu1 Wlith cimt sound-deadeni- lated with felt. The machinery necessary for the manufacture of turret top took practically a year for construction to Gitche Manito as he talked them through the falling waters. And there was always peace in the region, whatever was happening elsewhere, and smoking the pipe of peace meant the burying of the tomahawk then and there. Thus did they' as the Master of Life told them, and as a consequence they prospered. 0 turret top that is produced No fussing and watching must pass through four of these mammoth presses which exert a total pressure of 10,400,000 pounds. The drawing operation is performed by a toggle press which extends 20 feet below the plant floor level and 23 feet above. The base measures 21 feet in length and 12 feet in width and rests on two huge anchored to especially constructed concrete pillars. The head of the press alone weighs 125 tons. According to Mr. Chase the interior of the Chevrolet Master De Luxe is cooler in hot weather and warmer in winter, due to the fact that turret top reflects, rather than absorbs, the suns rays. The heat absorbed spreads out over the entire surface so that It cannot concentrate in one spot and enter the car. The heavy insulation, combined with the protection afforded by the dead air space between it and the headlining, prevents that possibility. A Glasgow professor, in order to emphasize the value of observation, prepared a little cupful of kerosene, mustard and castor oil, and calling the attention of his class to it, dipped a finger into the atrocious compound and then sucked his finger. He next passed the mixture around to the students, who all did the same, with the most dire results. When the cup returned, and he observed the faces of his students, he remarked: Gentlemen, I am afraid that you did not use your powers of observation. The finger that I put into the cup was not the same one that I stuck into my mouth. People, particularly advertisers, are woefully prone to just follow the leader in the matter of appealing to customers through the public prints. They fail to observe that certain newspapers, like The Box Elder News, have a select circulation among people who matter ; that their interests are considered in making up the editorial contents of the paper without featuring Crime news or scandal; that, finally, THESE PEOPLE THESE DISCRIMINATING SUBSCRIBERS TO THE NEWS-HA- VE OR CONTROL THE GREATER PART OF THE PURCHASING POWER OF THIS REGION.
