THE AMERICAN MASTERPIECE KANTLEEK Next Monday, February 12th, isnt a legal holiday. It doesnt rank with our great national fetes, like Independence day, Memorial day and the like. Yet there scarcely is a day on the calendar which has a deeper patriotic and national significance to the average American than February 12th Lincolns birthday. Voltaire once remarked very cynically that if there had been no God it would have been necessary to invent one. We may well remake this aphorism and say, if there had been no Abraham Lincoln it would have been necessary to invent one. For Lincoln, more than any other character we have produced, is the complete, ultimate expression of the American character of the last century. Sometimes it almost seems as if we must have invented him. His whole story is the perfect romance the sort of thing that would be written by some artist who wanted to fuse all the strength and idealism and pathos and tragedy of a whole nation into one great unforgettable masterpiece, 'It hiust have been fiction! Consider, for a moment; Born in a log cabin in a rough wilderness, the child of rude, untaught parents; reared in a frontier settlement, living in a hut in a western forest, spelling out his lessons at night by firelight ; moving to a raw prairie town, setting up as a storekeeper but failing bed and cause he was too g to be a real merchant; teaching himself law, practicing up and down the Sangamon river counties and winning the hearts of his neighbors by his honesty and homely humor; growing to middle age, and rising in his homespun simplicity to tilt with the nationally famous Stephen A. Douglas; and then leaping suddenly from comparative obscurity to the presidency just in time to tackle the greatest problem of in the face of harp in crude rubber prices the famous Kantleek Water Bottle has been reduced to SI. 50. And the famous Kantleek guarantee has been lengthened to FIVE YEARS. Here now is your assurance of water tight bottle service at minimum cost to you. And there is a corresponding Kantleek price reduction in other items. See them today. NOW, I V j KAN11EEK HOT WATER BAG ;H50 THE EDDY DRUG STORE The boxelder bug is the red and black insect commonly found upon and clustered around boxelder trees abundduring summer, and in greater ance in the fall. In early spring and fall they often cluster in large numbers on the sunny side of buildings. beOften, during these periods, they household pests. as come annoying Generally they feed on the under side of the leaves of boxelder and other maples, but often are found feeding on the young, developing fruit of cherries and apples, grapes, peaches, pears and plums. The punctures made by the bugs during feeding cause dimples in the fruit and, in many cases, cause it to fall. Last year considerable damage was done jn certain localities by the boxelder bug peat. The best time to control the bug is when they are congregated bn the sides of buildings, or around other hibernating quarters, during late fall or early spring. A thorough spraying with straight kerosene is recommended. Where it is necessary to spray trees, during dormant period, a 25 per cent kerosene emulsion should be used. Stock kerosene emulsion may be made as follows : Kerosene, 2 gallons; laundry soap, pound; water, one gallon. Larger or smaller amounts may be made in these proportions. Dissolve soap in boiling water; remove from fire, and immediately add kerosene, agitate the material until a creamy solution results. To make a 25 per cent solution for spraying the bugs, use one and gallons of water for each gallon of stock solution, agitate the mixture after adding the water. Straight kerosene should be used in all cases where there is not a danger of injuring the tree. The emulsion is effective against all unmature forms and partially effective on the adults. Both kerosene and kerosene emulsions will burn foliage and their use should be confined to spraying on walls, trunks of trees or dormant trees. A little industrious work now, will do much to eliminate annoyance from these pests during the remainder of the season. ..3:..... easy-goin- Lonesome Community Without Locomotive that age. Could that actually have happened? Or did we not dream it? Go on with the story. Follow Lincoln through his term as president; see how he discloses talents which you think foreign to him, how he threads his way surely through a of baffling, maze problems that the bravest of his time could not solve; note, too, how he preserves the human touch through it all, swapping back country jokes with generals and diplomats, giving freely of his sympathy and understanding to poor widows and luckless soldiers, hiding his lonely heart under rude humor. And then the climax of the story. Victorious over every obstacle, surrounded by the plaudits of a nation he is made a martyr. And, says legend, the thrushes in Illinois have ever since refused to sing on the anniversary of his death.. We dont always realize the magnificent beauty of the Lincoln story. An American who hasnt read and d the story of Lincoln from start to finish has neglected the moBt inspiring, gripping and dramatic narrative ever enacted in this land. heart-wracki- - Would you miss the whistle of the railroad locomotive in your town? The question is raised by the Oxford (Michigan) Leader, in an editorial just published and which follows, in part: The country needs the railroads. They still constitute our major transportation system. They contribute in taxes a large part of the cost of our educational structure. If we would retain the Important service they render to business life it Is important they be given proper support. , Merchants and manufacturers, and all others needing shipping facilities, should keep this thought iu mind while giving out their short-hafregiht business. It is a lonesome community that no longer hears the warning signal of an approaching train. Think that over, ul Blaze Tuesday Afternoon Is Quickly Extinguished The local fire department was called to the home of E. K. Brown Tuesday afternoon to extinguish a fire.
