The American Gold and Silver Institute haa compiled an Index of an corporation, partnership and Individuals actually producing or owning properties equipped to reduce gold end iilver. Many record were consulted and the resulting Index was checked by the return of the Institute's index questionnaire and otherwise. It is a live list, comrising a total of 3344 names, of which 2464, or per cent, are incorporated companies, J95 are and 434 are individual. Many of the partnerships and Individuals are those operating under lease, and, consequently, do not require extensive capital. It le, therefore, evident that extensive capital is requlried to Insure commercial success, since so large mber of corporations are engaged In tne precious metal mining Industry as compared with the number of partnerships and individuals. Of the 2464 Incorporated companies engaged in producing gold and silver 1678, or 68 per cent, produce principally gold, silver, or gold and silver, while 32 per cent produce gold and silver as a byproduct of base metale Of the 29. partnerships, 264, or 44 per rent, produce the precious metals, either separately or in combination, while but 1( per cent produce the preclou metals a of base metals. -Of the 690 individuals prodnctng gold and silver 85 per cent produce the precious metals alone, while but la per cent produce them as part-'ershl- ps ' Deduction 'Made. Worn s feeble beginning wkh government assistance In 1914, through the abnormal period of the war and a further interval during which their very existence was at stake In the eourts, the federal farm lean system has now grown until the amount of bonds of the federal land banka and the Joint vstock land bank outstanding Is rapidly approaching tbs billion dollar mark, says th Boston News Bureau, However one may quarrel with s Investment under which tax-frfunds are provided for a single claim of our population to th exclusion of othsrs. the federal farm loan system at least seems to have the merit that It works and opens to 4h farmer a reservoir of Investment funds almost limitless in in place of his former dependence and a. few great on load Institutional mortgage investors. At its inception the federal land banks art art ed with government funds for capital and the government bought their bonds. Today th Inveeting public Is so favorably disposed toward federal' land bpnk bonds that it can easily take a $73,000,000 issue, although a still month larger block waa sold only a few ago and sales of joint stock land bank bonds have recently been running at the rate of million a week. AJthoogh the bonds of both type of bank are styled "instrumentalities of th United States government." th government hae now but a small minority Interest hi the federal hwid banks, whose principal owners ar the Cooperative associations of borrowers The Joint stock land banks ha vs always been privately owned. Briefly, th farm loan system eonslst of twelve federal land banka patterned somewhat after the federal reserve banks and an unlimited nwnfber of Joint stock land banka All bonds of tho federal land banks are Joint obligations of all twelve bank banks, but each Joint stock landfederal stands alone. Loans mad by tho land banks are limited t $14,946 and must be liquidated In annual payments of not more than forty years, Farmers who borrow of th federal land banks associamust form cooperative farm tions In which they buy stock, $6 for each $100 borrowed. These associations in turn purchase stock In the federal land hanks. Of the 8349 incorporated companies, in partnerships and Individuals engaged the production of gold and silver, 73 per cent produce principally gold, silver, or gold and silver, while 18 per cent produce copper In comhlrmtioit with gold and sliver and 4 per cent are engaged in the production of gold and stiver wKh complex ores of lead and copper. After reading the above segregation of gold and silver, based upon the companies, partnerships and individuals engaged in the industry, one naturally Is led to Inquire as to whether this result would be checked by analysis of the actual mine production figures compiled by the United tstates geological survey.
