In the conference here delegates from Scandinavia, Holland, Germany, Austria, France and Japan reported rapid spread of knowledge of the subject and constantly lessening of official opposition. In England birth control has ceased to be a controversial If the government does not ubjeet, encourage the propaganda, it does not interfere with it. I I I , I j Germany Interested. The whlrll- $if of politic; as played in the primaries, ha turned up an interesting situation tn that two governors who were not per- mltted to serve their full term in that s high offlca of state, are offering States today for the United senate. Former Governor Lynn Frasier ot North Dakota already hat won the Republican nomination from that state, defeating Senator Porter J. McOumber, chairman of the powerful senate finance committee a place coveted - by Boles Penrose In preference to the presidency. Governor Frasier was hurled out of office not eo km ago at a lecall election held as the result . of a huge petition signed by those who did not believe tn bis administration of the mates affairs. in Texas, "Farmer Jim .Ferguson, thrown out of the office of governor by impeachment proceedings, hoe carried his case to the people end won the right to a place in the 'runoff' primary which will settle the Democratic senatorial nomination tn the Lone Star state. "Former Jim is pitted against Maj field, the Kuklux Klan candidate, and while the latter would appear to be a probable easy winner from the original primary figures, the toga does not always go that Way. There is no question but that n Influences all over the country will turn to help defeat Mayfield, and the only means of encompassing that end wltl be to nominate Ferguson. Ths Tsxas drys are in something of a dilemma. Farmer Jim Is a .liberal and somewhat "damp candidate, so the prohibitionists tn order to defeat him will hsve to vote for Mayfield. It will be a grand mlxup, thia runoff primary in Texas, and well worth going miles to see But the point of this story is that the purnary permits some great comebacks in politics. Both FTa!er and Ferguson would not have been considered- by political "bosses Having been recalled or Impeached, they would have been regarded as having no hold whatever upon the "dear peepul. and yet the primary balloting has shown lust the contrary. them-selve- antl-Kla- - Unquestionably one of the most beautl-- , ful sights in Washington these midsummer evenings Is the Lincoln Memorial, bathed in a white radiance from a broadly focussed searchlight. The manufacturers declared some time ago tha.t their one chance of profiting from eonductinw broadcasting stations would be by selling listening-isets. The British article is decidedly more expensive than that made in America and France, jsml German prices are, of course, lowest of all. The British set that sells for 325 is no better than the set sold in the United States for $3. Godfrey Itaact managing director of the Marconi Wireless Telegraph company sums up Royal) The Greatest Values Ever!!! CostConsidered. The esse for the protection of the industry can be put in a sentence cither the production of sets for wireless broadcasting will be protected from foreign competition, or the manufacturers will not be able to establish broadcasting stations. Unless broadcasting stations are established no one will want to buy wireless seta, for there will be little or nothing to listen to. It will cost over $1,000,000 a year to maintain.- - broadcasting stations. The market must be protected against the flood of Oerman and American sets which are waiting to come in. This is not a question of ordinary tariffs. The wireless industry is quite a new one, working under unusual conditions. The British firms will have to spend their rapital in creating the demand for sets. The cabinet decision, if confirmed, means that stations will -- be erected shortly and broadcasting will begin in earnest. It will mean employment for thousands of men and women. It is supposed that the importation of sets will be prevented by the postmaster general refusing to issue listening licenses except to those using British apparatus.
