Recently there also have been suggestions In important quarters that If Dr. Sun would resign office and lend his support to the iViove for recalling parliament there would be no further obstacle to settlement of all the differences between north and south China. Dr. Bun, up to the present time, has maintained a discreet alienee. However, there are Indications that the same pressure that brought about Hau's withdrawal aa a central figure In Chinese politics is operating to remove the southern president. General Chen Chiun-Minthe principal military power of south China, a few days ago demanded Dr. Sun's resignation and announced that he Intended to support a movement to bring about a reassembly of Vie parliament and the restoration to office of Li who was forced from the presidency .hy the militarists In 1914. In addition. Bun has contended steadily that his ambition was not a personal one but merely that China be restored to unity and peace. Hsu's letter of resignation virtually called on Bun to resign aa a matter of fairness. In that It Intimated the northern president was relinquishing his office as part of a plan under whl"h both he and Bun should eliminate themselves from the front rank of political affairs Another Important step toward Chinese pacification appears to have been taken hi the north, where General Wu Pel-Fwhose prime object has been announced as tha removal of all who oppose Chinese unity, has started a determined drive against General Chang Tso-Liwhoee control of Peking he recently broke. Wu's forces were reported this .morning aa in complete control of the Chinese Eastern railway. Wu Is aiming at Shanhalkwan, on the gulf of Liaotung, In Manchuria. Meanwhile Chang, who long has acted as a civil disturber, le having difficulties In maintaining bis own authority. Feeling against him seems to be spreading In Manohurla. which previously has been his stronghold, and recently it .waa reported from Mukden that even officers of hit forces were wavering In their allegiance to him. There have been several mutinies among hls troops, and, as Gsnsral Wu has 50.000 or more troops available for hls northward drive, Chang's situation- - la regarded as extremely difficult, if not precarious.
