Remember your teacher in the first grade or was it a kindly lady who schooled you in one of the higher grades who exerted a profound influence on your whole life? Think, back to those days when you instead, perhaps, of your son or daughter were sitting before the master and instructor of your classroom. Reflect on the tremendous part played in your life, not only as a child, but through adulthood, by your early teachers. Truly it must be almost staggering to a teacher who starts a new years work to think of her responsibilities and her oportunities for molding the minds of impressionable youth. No task of government could be of effect for good or more bad than the selection of teachers and school officials who will make wise use of their power. In years) the technical qualifications of a teacher have been emphasized so much that we fear that even more vital characteristics of the successful teacher may have been neglected. A girl could have all the normal school requisites and yet lack entirely the maturity of judgment and qualities of leadership and interest in her work so essential to the proper influence on children. Professor Walter Burr stresses this point in an article in the Farm Journal wherein he declares that if he had ot choose between putting limited school funds into equipment or a teacher with personality, he would vote for personality. A teacher who can inspire the grade school child and interest him In solving his simple problems, can build in him a will power for achievement which will last through life, he declares. The childs attitude toward all the duties of his future life depends upon Hors races, of the running class, broncos, mules and steers, bucking It isnt so many years ago that and musical enterclowns certain pessimists would shake their roping, out a program round will tainers heads when anyone mentioned the replete with thrills during each afterPanama canal.
