Wales, hy boat to be refined. The coke for the smelting of San Rosalie ore Is brought in from On the reEurope by steamers, which I" turn trip take a cargo of copper. this way transportation' charr.es are, conreasona sidering the mileage, kept at able figure. At the Santo Tomas mine, operations of which was under the direction of Mr. copKoblnson, a remarkably ore is mined, he says. Shipments per 5f this ore, made to the Garfield. I'tah, Calif., flnielter by boat to Wan Ilego, and thence by rail, averaged 29 per fent ' copper. The famous Alamo mines, worked in the early days by the padres, are among the richest gold properties in the world, according to Mr. Robinson. a This propproduction erty, which Is said to have record of over 7,000,0l0. Is In a bad state, owing to the manner In which operations were conducted by the last company. The ore, which carries from I00 to $1200 pere ton In gold, was mined from a contact vein. Although the last built a millcompany to operate the mine ing plant, a greater pftrt of the ore was shipped direct to Europe for treatment. In the last few years affairs have been acvery tranquil in ijower California, The native of cording to Mr. Robinson. and the peninsula arc more traceable Mexican enterprising Uian the average Most 01 the mine labor is recruited from the Yaout and Seris Indians, who. when trained, make excellent workmen. As far as climate and scenery are concerned. Lower California Is one of the most beautiful countries in the world, .ays Mr. Robinson. of At7000I,a Paz. which, people, Is the with Its population tem'.argest town on the peninsula, the never goes below fiO perature seldom or for The W, or above country degrees the most part Is well wooded In the north pines, firs and other trees of the evergreen variety cover the hills. In the south along the lowlands most of the timber is a hardwood consisting of The principal mahogany and ebony, mountain range, the Sierra de la tiigatite, tias many lofty peaks. With its high mountain's and rolling, wooded hills, whose restful green forms a pleasing con. the of blue trast to the tropical tea. Lower California Is indeed a delight to the eye. The country has agricultural as well s mining possibilities, according 1o Mr Robinson. As a whole the soil Is fertile snd water fpr irrigation, in those districts where the rainfall Is Insufficient for the raising of crops, can be easily developed. Any kind of tropical fruits flourish. At San Ignaclu the finest dates As In the world are said to be raised. s matter of fart, says Jr. Robinson, many of the dnt.s shipped to Amer-ja- , ostensibly from the orient, are raised and packed at San Ignaeio. With the recognition of the present government of Mexico by the United States. Mr. Robinson Is of the opinion that conditions In the republic will take a turn for the better, I'residem Obregon wlth-oia doubt will have the loyal support of the northern stateB, he says. The loyalty of the southern part of Mexico will be more, a matter of doubt. Removal of the embargo on gold and silver SiandIn copper ares carrying In excess of gold would, no doubt, serve to stimulate the raining industry of Mexico greatly, j After a visit to Denver and other points attend to business, Mr Robinson plans if to return to I .a Pax to look after the affairs of the 1,'nlted Mines company, of fhlch company he is manager. ltirlc8 mln;, mor fsvorubt In Made rt FRAHCI8C0 MINIilO STOCKS. reported by J." If the June house of representatives adopts a joint resolution by Senator Bursum, adopted by the senate yesterday, no assessment work on mining claims will be required for the calendar year 1920 nor for the first six months of 1921, but In the future the regular 1100 worth of work must be done each year, the year, however, being changed to the fiscal year beginning July 1, Instead of the calendar year, as In the past. The last session of congress passed a special bill providing that assessment work for 1920 might be done any time trp to June 30, 1921, but that extension of time would be made unnecessary by the enactment of the Bursum resolution, if It passes the house before June 30. Under This resolution every owner of a mining claim intending to hold his claim and do the requisite work during the coming year would have to record hit purpose with the local land office before August 1 next or his claim would be subto relocation. The text of the Burject sum resolution follows: "That the provisions of section 2324 of the revised statutes of the United States, which requires on each mining claim located and until a patent has been issued therefor, not 'ess than $100 worth of labor to be performed, or Improvements aggregating such amount to be made each year, be, and the same Is hereby suspended as to all mining claims. "In the United States, excluding Alaska, during the calendar year of 1920, and including the 30ttr dav andupte of June, 1921; Provided, that every claimant of any such mining claim. In order to obtain the benefits bf this resolution, shall file or cause to be filed In the office where the location notice or certificate Is recorded, on or before the 1st day of August, itJl, a notice of his desire to hold said mining claim under the provisions of this resolution. And hereafter the labor required under the of 324 section of the provisions revised statutes of the United States shall be performed during each fiscal vear, the 1st of July anil ending on the Jflth day day of June." 84 101 7V4!
