It is almost Impossible to properly time this system without the use of a battery, but as the battery need only be used temporarily the dry cells of the bouse electric bell can be borrowed for this purpose. At least four cells should bs used. The battery can be placed on ths running board, and one wire from it connected to any handy part of the engine, while the other is connected to the binding post or terminal for it on the battery box. This binding post will be found vacant, no wire being attached to It. The steps to take to time and wire a four-un- it system are aa follows: L By turning the engine over by hand determine the direction in which the rotor rotates when the engine is running. 3. Find ths firing order. The other wires call be found likewise. IL Test the setting. Whan the switch Is closed coll No. 1 should vibrate, but if the spark control lever to slightly retarded It should stop vibrating. If It falls to stop, the rotor must be turned back a little. Failure of tho coil to vibrate is a atga that the rotor must be moved a little In the direction of rotation. By noticing the amount the spark control lever must be retarded before the coll stops vibrating, or advanced before it starts to vibrate, you can judge the amount the rotor must bo moved one way -or tho other. 12. After the rotor has been properly set, attach the rest of tho primaries In the firing order: that la, if ths firing orcoll No. 2 will be attached der Is to the second segment hit by the rotor. Set the rotor so that a line drawn from the mark you have just made to the center of the rotor shaft will pass through the point of the rotor which would first touch the segment of the timer and fasten it. As said above. Ford cars are not furnished with a battery, the only current coming from the magneto. You will see later, when the magneto is taken up, that the voltage of It increases or decreases with the speed of the engine. At cranking speed the voltage of the m quite low, end so the addition tery for starting will often make the starting easier. To Install a battery all that Is necessary Is to connect one wire from the battery to some convenient screw of the metal part of the car; aa, for example, one of the Screws which holds ths transmission cbver In piece. While the other wire 1s connected to the battery binding post or terminal on the col box. This binding post will be found vacant, and on a Una with the binding post for the wire from the magneto. No other wires need be changed In any way. If when starting the switch Is thrown to B, which stands for battery, then the current from the battery only will go to the colls. When the engine has started, the switch must be thrown to M, or Meg., when the battery, will be cut out and the magneto cut In. About fivo dry cells, connected In series should be used for the battery, although a storage battery can be used. The storage battery will have to be charged outside periodically, however. A storage battery cannot be charged from the magneto because the magneto gives an alternating current, while the battery requires a direct currant Misguided Autoist Victim of Unpleasant Experiences Not ths least of winter driving troubles difficulty of starting the engine.
