Show THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE, TUESDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER I Ctppw BUvor.. Load Spoltor 919.99 89. II 8009 99, York) (In (it. ,Lool.) Unr ia Imports', of . boln)..... markets provided recently complained of by British bullion dealers. In London bid prices advanced to Cl cents. New pence, equivalent to 98 York. These bids, ss 9 the New York Financial Review, were ignored, however, because the demands from China were around 99 cents and equivalent to more than 1 on Shanghai exchange. The national bank of Germany Is again buying silver and Is credited with 9675,000 additional sliver holdings in the past two weeks. Pronounced demand for silver by China this week carried the price of foreign-origi- n silver from 95c to 99c. For nearly a week this demand has made New York the leading stiver market of the world, and has, temporarily at least, relegated London to a secondary position. Silver purchases by the United States mint since May 17 have been at the rate of about 43 000,000 ounces yearly, against 52 ooo,- estimated domostio, 000 ounces or less Imports and exports of silver since May 17 show liquidation of practically all the foreign-origi- n silver which the smelters have been holding The drop In Mexican Imports has been a large factor In this changed situation. It has been responsible for neatly 75 per rent of total imports, and for the past three weeks shipments to this country have been on an average of about acalnst previous weekly averages of around $1,400,000. The provisional eminent of Mexico la said to be using one-hatotal silver output for silver coinage. This loss of around $550,000 Is rather positive and leaves a comparatively small amount of foreign-origi- n liver available. This Is particularly evident In the London markets, where demands for the past two weeks have resulted- In the Inability of bullion dealers there- to supply these wants without showing their position to New York dealers, with the effect that New York Is doing a larger direct business. $860,-00- 9, lf Power Now Available for Rochester Mines Activity in All Lines Is Ex a: Limited tremely Devoid of Character. Quotations follow; LI8TED STOCKS ROCHESTER, Nev., Sept. 13. Mines Rochester district are being supplied with power for operations after an Idleness of a month, due to lack of power caused by the shortage of water for the Nevada Valleys Power company's plant at Lahontan. The Packard and Rochestef Sliver Mines companies have resumed so have other industries and operations, In Pershing and Churchill county. Fallon, Lovelock and other towns served the lahontan plant are again enjoyingbyelectric lights instead of lamps and candles. Recent storms In Nevada, together with the fact that the Irrigation season is drawing to a close, have increased the water supply sufficiently for the needs or the power oompany. , Tran sports, tipn conditions Mexico In reign of lawlessness, operations at mines and smelters had to be curtailed frequently on account of the penchant of bandit hordes for tearing up railroad tracks and setting fire to rolling stock. Now the company is free from Interruptions growing out of freight and extent of current output la limited American only by the labor problem. Smelting officials say the Mexican peon has become modernised to the extent that he does as Uttle work as possible for the best pay he can get. While the five Mexican smelters era running close to capacity, output of the mines is still below 100 per cent, because of low perform ance qf labor. However, earnings from the Mexican increase properties are showing stead aa a result of abtlltv to secure better transportation facilities, and receipts from this source will figure substantially in the 1920 income account for the first time since overthrow of the Dial regime. Aside from improvement In the copper market, this factor alone Is suf. flcient to account for the strength shown last week by the common stock. Before Mexico was upset by Internal disorders, was only a fair average return 16,000,000 rom its Mexican properties. This was equal to $6 a share on the Junior Issue, divicommon over a the leaving margin dend. American Smelting's reflnerv at Perth Amboy for producing electrolytic and blast furnace tin has now been expanded to a capacity of 1800 tons monthly, .against 1200 when the plant was started. Actual output is running at approximately 1000 tons monthly. Income from this department Is steady and affords another reason why American Smelting is entitled to show strength Independent of the tie-up- s, Plant to Extend Fertilizer Work; Lead Recovery Will Be Tried. Company Anaconda Copper Mining oompany has plans laid, which, If they materialise as expected, will place this corporation In the front ranks of the fertiliser producers of ths country. Experiments in production of fertiliser, according to. the Boston News Bureau, have been conducted at the old Bradley plant at the reduction works. Anaconda, for a number of months past, and the results achieved have been encouraging. The present scheme embraces the utilisation of the leaching plant at the Washoe works for use as a fertiliser factory, aa hers are available a number of tanks which can he adapted to the treatment of the phosphate rock in its conversion Into fertiliser. Engineers of Anaconda now are working upon the problem of tanks, seeking s material which will withstand the action of the sulphuric acid. The tanks In the leaching plant are constructed of wood, but this material, although heavily painted, ylelda to the ravages of ths acid. Already Anaconda haa perfected a aaies organisation and the market is being felt out." It Is stated that tentative bids for large amounts of fertilizer have been bad from Illinois and Indiana. Agents for Anaconda are endeavoring to secure s portion of the Japanese trade. With Anaconda's product, a auperacld phosphate, that is a fertiliser carrying considerably more phosphoric acid than ths usual fertiliser of commerce, Anaconda is looking for a higher price for Us product, as it will be of a higher grade and more susceptible to ready solution by the soli. Engineers intimate that ultimately Anaconda will be treating up to 1000 or more tons of phosphate rock dally, which would yield about 760 tons of fertiliser. As two tone of sulphuric acid are required for the treatment of one ton of phosphate rock, this new Industry would afford an outlet for the company's sulphurio acid, of which Anaconda now Is making only 3 per cent of whet It could make were there demand for It, but the company Is too remote from acid markets and freight rates are prohibitive. Present acid output is 170 tons daily. For the first time In lta history the company Is preparing for the recovery of lead in Its Montana smelting plants One of the old Boeton A Montana reduction works stacks at Great mis haa been converted Into a lead stack for ths treatment of the residue from the electrolytic stno plant, and the lead recovered from these residues will form no small credit to operating expenses Heretofore ths residues have been shipped to the International plant of Anaconda at Tooele, Utah. bllver-iln- o ores from ths Nettle mine of Anaconda and the Hibernia mine of Davis-Dal- y adjoining are running high In lead, together with the ores from ths Emma mine of Butte Copper and Zinc, which Is being operated by the Anaconda. The capacity of the lead stack has not been announced, but It is believed it will amount to at least- 200 tons dally. 8)111 men. including i116 R. p. Morris, C. 1 Whitney, C. G. Ballantyne and Dr. L.
