What lie said we find reported in the Salt Lake Tribune ns follows: I w ih to say a few words in relation to the pay of jurors. The government has hitherto paid on their part, and it has been the practice for tlie Territory to pay on their part, until recently. The press of this country has made some wrong assertions in relation to the object of these courts, in that the courts had decided that the U. S. Marshal should receive funds to pay jurors for United States ami Territorial business, and that he was the only lawful officer fur this purpose. This is not so. This question has never been before' tlui court s and it has not been decided. The papers put this before tbe people in a wrong light; and lately there was a piece in tl(e Salt Lake Herald headed anolh- er attempt at outrage, and referred to mv going to Washington to endeavor to to jirocure means through Congress, run these courts in opposition to the people. These are not the facts. I have been to Washington to endeavor to raise, money to pay jurors, aud made an unsuccessful trip. I went for money to pay jurors who had served the people and should have their pay. It was for this purpose they have served the courts, as men and good citizens, and their services are very essential among the citizens. This court has been respected, aud with your help it shall continue to be. It is true that Judge McKean dis- charged his jury, not wishing to keep men from their w'ork without pay; but these newspaper reports are not true. TELEGRAPHIC! CORINNE DAILY JOURNAL. con-side- ; 'A YE The following amusing story is told of Wiertz, the celebrated German artist: After having finished the portrait of the old aristocratic Countess de , who pretended to lie only thirty when nearly sixty, she refused to accept U) painting, saying that it did not look anything like herself, and that her most intimate friends 'would not recognize a single feature of her on that piece of canvas. Wiertz smiled kindly at the remark, and, as a true knight of old, gallantly recon-ductc- d the lady to her carriage. Next morning there was a grand disturbance in the Rue de la Madeline. A big crowd was gathered before a window', and the following words were whispered from ear to car ; Is the Countess de in really jail for her debts? Wiertz had exercized a little vengeance toward liis noble but unfair customer. As soon as she had refused the portrait, he set to work and painted a few iron bars on the picture, with these words : In jail for debt. He cxibited the painting in a jewelers window in the principle street of Ilrnssells, aud the effect was instantaneous. A few hours later the Countess was back in Wiertzs studio, pouring invectives on him at high pressure to have cxibited her likeness under such scandalous, etc., etc. ', 1 DEFY COriPETITIOn !
