The appointment was made by Trust Lands Director, Kevin Carter and Associate Director, John Andrews. Ms. McConkie received her J.D. degree in 2002 from the University of Utah S. J. Quinney College of Law, and her undergraduate degree in political science at the U of U. She started her career as a law clerk for Trust Lands in 2001 where she researched and Extension agent answers fall gardening questions Fall brings a myriad of gardening questions. When do I pick my apples? Where should I buy bulbs? When do I plant them? At our Extension offices, we receive many questions this time of year, said Jerry Goodspeed, Utah State University Extension horticulturist. Here are answers to common inquiries I have received. Q: Why are the older needles on my pine tree turning yellow and dropping? A: This is normal. Although we call these trees evergreens, in reality, most needles only live between three and seven years. Every fall, many of the older needles on a pine tree turn yellow and fall off. If younger needles are dropping, this can be a sign of stress. Many evergreens have been stressed due to drought conditions the past few years. Be certain to give all evergreens a long drink of water this fall. Let the water dribble from a hose around the trees root zone overnight, if possible. Q: How can I tell when my apples are ripe and ready to pick? A: Eat one. If it tastes good, the apples are ready to pick. There is no magic formula or way to predict ripeness. Many times the color will be the indicator, but I still go back to flavor. It doesnt matter how attractive an apple is if it doesnt taste good. Q: How can I keep my tomatoes from freezing? A: If it is going to freeze hard, bring green tomatoes into a storage room and allow them to ripen indoors. The plant can also be dug and hung upside down in the garage where the tomatoes will continue to ripen. Should I work organic Q: matter into my garden soil in the fall or wait until the spring? A: My initial instinct is to always put off today what you can have someone else do later. However, when it comes to soil, the more you do now to improve it, the better your plants will perform later. Working organic matter into the soil in the fall allows it to compost throughout the winter. It also gets the soil ready for planting the next spring. The important thing to do is to work as much organic matter into the soil as possible, and spring and fall are both great times to do that. drafted memoranda concerning issues in natural resource, environmental, real property, and contract law. Prior to her recent return to Trust Lands, Ms. McConkie was an Associate Attorney at the Salt Lake City law firm of Lear & Lear. Her emphasis was on the acquisition, exploration, permitting and production of oil, gas and mining properties. She also assisted in litigation and appeals before courts and administrative agencies. We are delighted with Michelles decision to join the Trust Lands Administration, says Associate Trust Lands Director John Andrews. Her education and work experiences are a great match for the projects shell have here. The School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration is an independent state agency which manages 3.5 million acres of Utah trust lands for the benefit of Utahs schools and other public institutions. Where is the best place to buy spring flowering bulbs, and what do I look for when I purchase them? A: I like to purchase bulbs from a local nursery or garden center because I can see the bulbs and make sure they are large and healthy. I have ordered bulbs from catalogs before and sometimes they have delivered great bulbs, and other times it was hard to dis- Q: Temples built by H.M.K 6th graders ... Sixth graders at H.M.K. When I pick out bulbs, I look for those that are large and firm, and I make sure they do not have soft or rotting spots. I also purchase a variety of bulbs that bloom at different times so there is color somewhere in the garden throughout the spring. I suspect there are many more questions still hanging around out there, Goodspeed concluded. One I am often asked is what a horticulturist does in the winter. The answer like the to that is simple rest of the plants, we just go dormant. We Attorney Generals office defends internet sex law again defend a state law that forbids using the Internet to solicit sex with a minor. Last month the Utah Court of Appeals affirmed the convictions of two men who challenged the constitutionality of the statute. Now the Attorney Generals Office will fend off another challenge after both men announced they will ask the Utah Supreme Court to hear the case. This law is a vital weapon for prosecutors, parents and children. Those who prey on the Internet should plan to stay in prison, says Attorney General Mark Shurtleff.
