You write that some of the S&Ps are (Worlds Fairs), and therefore more desirable or valuable. Its obvious that you have some twinges about getting the best deal. Heres the bottom line: What is your tolerance for the details of selling? For total control of the situation, you need to handle and catalog exactly what is in those boxes, noting condition, value and desirability. You will go to the library and pore over books on S&Ps to identify your treasures. As research, you will check eBay and other online auctions to see what similar pieces brought. And you will map out a sales plan for selling that will position each pair at best advantage. You say thats not you? Q: My daughter has ac- quired an old Columbia Grafonola and she has no idea of its worth or whom to ask about it. Can you help ? Jean, Tucson, Ariz. A: Smart collectors know that the Internet is a good place to start when you dont have a clue. Go to eBay and find completed sales for similar items. Then visit the library for reference books on the items. Remember, top dollar goes to the best of any kind in superior condition. Regarding Avon, the price guide collectors swear by is Bud Hastins Avon Collectors Encyclopedia: The Official Avon Collectors Price Guide. Now in its 17th edition, the book is $29.95 from Collector Books. Q: Will appreciate anything you can tell me about a metal statue marked Trodoux. I cant find any info on it. Barbara, Poway, Calif. A: You couldnt find any- thing on the Internet, Barbara, because the sculptor, Henri Emile Adrien Trodoux, was a minor figure in a group of late 19th century French sculptors called les animaliers. Working primarily in bronze, the artisans formed heroic to depictions of animals in naturalistic settings. Your piece, showing a boxer catching a rodent, with sheaves of grain molded on the base, is an example. When information is not readily available, smart collectors turn to specialized sources. Auction houses subscribe to multiple databases of realized prices. Happily, several of the same sites are available to the public for daily fee of $7.95 use. For a one-da- y on www.artfact.com, you can find that an exact duplicate of your sculpture in the manner oF Trodoux sold for $607 at Christies London in 1998.
