J. Wang and Grand County Sheriff Jim Nyland at the Annual Utah Sheriffs Conference in Salt Lake City on September 21. Mr. Wang of Moab received the Honorary Sheriff's Award. The Award was presented by Sheriff Jim Nyland on behalf of The Sheriff's Association. JJ Wang as nominated by Sheriff Nyland for his Outstanding Community Service Activities and his special Interest in the Emergency Services of Grand County Elk are plentiful as fall season approaches Plenty of bull elk will be available to hunters when Utahs 2004 general rifle season opens Oct. 9, but hunters need to put in some work to be successful. Elk are excellent at getting away from roads, said Jim game big Karpowitz, coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources. You may see some bulls near roads during the first few hours of the hunt but once it starts, they head into backcountry areas and can be tough to find. To be successful takes patience and hard work. You need to spend time in the backcountry looking for elk and finding the groups that have bulls in them, he said. Some of these areas are remote and roadless, so having horses can help. Hunters who put in the time and effort have plenty of elk to look for. After last falls hunting seasons were over, DWR biologists conducted surveys and estimated the states elk population at just more than 58,000 animals. Thats about 10,000 less than the statewide goal of 68,400. Weve had to reduce elk populations over the past few years because of poor range conditions brought on by the drought, Karpowitz said. Now that conditions are improving, were starting a printing at Clj e Cttres- (3lnhcpenbmt 35 East Cente Street Phone 435-259-75- , 25 Let Us Give You A Quote statewide goal. Karpowitz says elk should be spread out when the season starts Oct. 9. The rains that fell this spring and summer have provided a lot of green feed for the elk, and I expect them to be spread out, he said. Theyll also be at higher elevations until forced lower by snow. Karpowitz reminds elk hunters to obtain vehicle travel maps before heading afield. The maps show where OHVs can and cant be used. They may be obtained from the agency usually the U.S. Forest Service or the Bureau of Land that Management manages the land youll be hunting. Both any bull and spike bull permits are still available for the hunt. They may ' be purchased at DWR offices and from more than 170 hunting license agents in Utah. A list of the license agents who are selling permits is available at the DWRs Web site (wildlife.utah.govlicenses). Hunters may also purchase a permit at the DWR Web site. Permits purchased online are mailed to hunters. It takes about a week for a permit to arrive in the mail, so hunters who buy a permit online need to buy it far enough in advance that it will arrive before they leave for their hunt. Ceremonial baskets featured Thursday at Edge of Cedars Museum On the evening of September 30th, from 7:00 to 9:00p.m., the Edge of the Cedars Museum will feature a special reception and book signing by local author, Georgiana Kennedy Simpson, for her new publication Navajo Ceremonial Baskets. In conjunction with the book signing, the museum will open its latest exhibit Sacred Symbols, Sacred Space which demonstrates the evolution and meaning of the Navajo ceremonial basket. The baskets, memory aides, and commercial gradual climb back to our other materials featured in the exhibit are from the Simpson Family private collection. The book and exhibit trace the origins of the ceremonial basket and its importance as a mnemonic device and sacred item throughout a Navajo persons life. Stories will be shared by the people most intimately involved in the creation and use of the basket; the medicine men, weavers, and teachers of Navajo culture. Georgiana Kennedy Simpson, was bom and raised in Gallup, New Mexico. Her fondest childhood memories are of trips to the Zuni and Hopi villages as well as Navajo country. As her father picked up rugs, baskets, and jewelry, the scent of lanolin and sumac left an indelible impression on her. Georgiana married another trader, Steve Simpson, and has resided in Bluff, Utah for the past nine years. She operates a trading business, Kennedy Indian Arts, while raising her two favorite redheads, Kira (8) and Grange (4). Inspired by a small book about life in Navajo country written by her Grandmother Kennedy in the 1960s, Georgiana gathered the courage to or Collecting Authentic Indian Arts and Crafts, authored A Guide to Indian Jewelry of the Southwest, but is most excited about her latest book project, Navajo Ceremonial Baskets., Sacred Symbols, Sacred Space. For her, writing is a labor of love. The labor was akin to a r pregnancy, all in the last trimester, but expressing her love for basketry, the southwestern landscape, and four-yea- traditional Navajo stories made it worthwhile Sacred Symbols, Sacred Space will be shown in the Main Floor Exhibit Hall from September 30th, 2004 to March 31st, 2005.
