Show Page A8 -- - Wtz lCHtmeg-(3lttftgpgKfr- Thursday, September 9, 2004 gtt Moab's historic pianos at museum welcome new arrival The Dan OLaurie Museum notes that when Moabs newest piano - a Steinway grand takes a boat trip down the Colorado River this week to be dedicated by the Moab Music Festival, history will repeat itself. Moabs first piano came n here in 1898 by wagon from the railroad depot at Thompson Springs and had to be ferried across the Colohorse-draw- rado. That piano - - can a be Chickering upright seen and played at the Dan OLaurie Museum. The piano was donated to the museum by Moab native Deone Skewes. She was the youngest of five children in the John and Lydia Skewes fam- the children learned to play piano on the Chickering, and Deone became an accomplished pianist who made music in this valley for many years. Chickering pianos were famous long before Steinway. Bostonian Jonas Chickering is sometimes referred to as the Father of the Modern Piano. He founded his company in 1823, fully 30 years before the Steinways started production first in Germany and then in the U.S. The Chickering brand disappeared around the time of World War II but was revived by Baldwin in 1995. The museum also has an- ily. All Moab Music Festival other historic piano - a player piano produced by Beckwith, along with numerous rolls of music that can be played. This piano is on permanent loan to the museum from Jane Newell Schaffner, daughter of longtime Moab resident Maxine Newell and the late Hub Newell. Perhaps in the next century, the Steinway will join its brethren in the Museum. In the meantime, Moabs piano tuner Miriam Graham keeps the museums historic pianos in tune.
