Suit filed in 2003 plane crash Survivors of a man killed in an airplane crash near the UtahColorado border east of La Sal in 2003, have filed suit in U. S. District Court against the pilots estate and the Colorado company that owned the plane. The suit claims pilot Therese Moon, of Colorado, was not certified to fly the complex airplane one that has retractable landing gear, flaps and a controllable pitch propeller. It alleges Air West Flight Center in Longmont, Colo., negligently rented the aircraft to her. The legal action was filed by Barbara Burk of Conroe, Texas, on behalf of her two children and seeks unspecified damages. Their father, Barry Burk, of Longmont, was one of the four victims of the Jan. 23, 2003 crash. Burk and three including Moon, decided to travel to Las Vegas to watch the Super Bowl. Other victims were Jeff Bynum, 43; Dennis Irsik, 44; Burke, 36 and the pilot, Moon, 38. All were employees of the Home Depot store in Longmont. A San Juan County County rancher, Curtis Wilcox found the plane two days later after spotting smoke rising from a canyon. About seven local musical groups and individual performers have signed on to participate in the locals showcase at Moabs Star Hall. The intent is to explore as well as recognize local talent, Folk Festival organizer Melissa Schmaedick said Tuesday. The variety of performers represents a cross section of the local talent in our community. The lineup for the 7:30 p.m. concert will include performances by Andy Ryan Pitas, Joel Nystrom, the Valley Voices A Capella, and Brian Coulter, and the local band Fill Dirt. The Moab Dance Band, a new community band formed by Christopher Layer, the Moab Music Festivals artist in residence, will perform a long set of con- - pants. These things evolve, Local musicians will be showcased as Folk Music Festival kickoff by Lisa Church this years festival and future festivals, Schmaedick said. The free concert is sponsored in part by a grant from the Canyonlands Arts Council. We want to make the event as accessible to everyone as possible, Schmaedick said. Offering free admission to this concert is one way we can do that. Although the Moab Folk Music Festival is only in its second year, organizers hope the event will eventually gain a national reputation among folk musicians as well as folk music enthusiasts. The festivals successful debut in 2003 has already put Moab on the map, at least regionally, as Knight said. The original idea was to go camping so we could do more on the trails than you can do in a day. It has evolved to include more day trips. Of the 156 active registrations, 33 were club trail guides, including leaders and tail gunners. Over the years, the event has averaged about 2.5 persons per vehicle. County High School Auditorium, and the Moab Ball Field. Festival organizers are in need of at least 80 volunteers for the three-daevent, Schmaedick said. A volunteer sign-umeeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. on September 22 at the Moab Arts and Recreation Center stage room. The idea saw the result of a sense that I get that sometimes the events we bring here focus on outside talent. This will show that we have talented people right here as well, Schmaedick said.
