Show Real EstatI Residential Rentals Land & Lots Commercial Leases r; . ; ;77 Six to compete for Miss Grand County title Aug. 14 by Jeff Richards contributing writer In Six young women will vie for the title at this years Miss Grand County Scholarship Pageant, scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. in the Grand County High School auditorium. Last years winner Monica Arehart will crown her successor at the conclusion of the evening. Tickets are $5 per person and will be available at the door. This years field of contestants includes two with previous Miss Grand County pageant experience: AmAsie Green was first runner-uin the 2003 pageant, and Rebecca Francis was named Miss Congeniality in 2002. This year marks the third straight year a pageant has been held in Grand County, following a hiatus of over a decade. Once again, $1,500 in scholarship money will be awarded to the winner, with $750 and $500 going to the first and second attendants, respectively. Additional prizes of $100 each will be awarded in the individual categories of interview, talent, and Miss Congeniality, said pageant director Kris Hackney. p addition, Grand Countys prestigious Woman of Achievement award will be presented during the pageant. Previous winners of the award were Carol Hines in 2002 and Bobbie Long in 2003. The following are short biographical paragraphs about each Miss Grand County contestant (in alpha- betical order), based on the fact sheets provided to pageant organizers: Rebecca Francis, 19, is the daughter of Zeke and Maralee Francis. She graduated from Grand County High in 2003 and recently completed a year of study at Dixie State College. She hopes to earn a college degree in either physical education or physical therapy. She was a class valedictorian at GCHS in 2003, and also received numerous other honors, including being named to e team the Academic in both track and soccer. She was also a Sterling Scholar, active in student government for four years, and lettered in All-Stat- track, soccer, band, and drama. She hopes to become a physical education teacher or coach or a physical therapist. She is a certified life- - c guard, and her platform is swimming education and safety. 'AmAsie Green, 20, is the daughter of Kent and Cricket Green. She is a 2003 graduate of Grand County High School, where she was on the honor roll and lettered in band and drama. She recently completed a year of study at Dixie State College, and plans to attend the Paul Mitchell cosmetology school in Provo this fall. She has also been a member of the Canyonlands PRCA Rodeo Drill Team for the past seven years, and was the Rodeo Queen in 2002. She hopes to operate her own business after graduating from cosmetology school and business college. Her platform is to start a youth mentoring program called Find your dream home in The real estate section, the most current residential, commercial, and land listings in print! Future career ambitions include acting and teaching drama and choir at the high school level. Her platform issue is to provide service to elchildren. ementary-age Lynsey Nielsen, 18, is the daughter of Kimberly Boger and Christopher Nielsen. She graduated in 2004 from Grand County High School, where she lettered in drill. She was recently accepted at the University of Utah, and hopes to graduate from college and become a reconstructive plastic surgeon. Her platform issue is KLU! (Kids Looking Up!). Danielle Hodson, 17, is the Ed and Hodson of daughter Becky and Tom Ripper. She will soon start her senior year at Grand County High School, of the where she is Devilettes drill team and a member of Voices of Youth. She hopes to later attend Arizona State University and possibly major in business. She enjoys dancing, singing, and fine arts, and her chosen platform issue is patriotic awareness. Ashly Leavitt, who turns 18 on Aug. 9, is the daughter of Bart and Sharon Leavitt. She will be a senior at Grand County High this year.
