Multi-talente- d by Lisa Taylor contributing writer Provided the City of Moab and Main Street businesses can work out the kinks, residents and visitors might have access to free bus service next summer. Bob Jones, of Expeditions, revived his 2001 proposal at a July 29 city workTag-a-Lon- g shop, and got a positive response from staff and council members, at least for the general idea. Nothing came of the 2001 discussions, but there is a mandate to explore public transportation options in the citys general plan. Jones was clear about his motives, and those of any other outfitters who might provide drivers, vehicles and related insurance. This is not out of the goodness of my heart. I think were capable of a joint purpose; Im simply marketing. Although he talked about brochures and videos on the buses and joked about the competition getting on the bandwagon, he also pointed out that in July, his drivers pick up an average of 60 people a day for river trips, and those people need three parking spots: one at their motel, one at the restaurant, and one at their activity. Based on when staff and buses are available, he proposed running 15- - or circuits during June, July and August, from possibly 5 to 10 p.m. The route would run from te singer, songwriter and instrumentalist Dave Steward rounds out the Bar-Wranglers and adds lots of hot guitar pickin, solid bass playing and vocals to the group. Council member Kyle Bailey pointed out that the service could also tie into a proposed Arches National Park shuttle service. The city would be responsible for publicizing the route and schedule and setting up p signs, and City Manager Donna Metzler said funding for advertising or a route map might be something the Moab Area Travel Council could bus-sto- take on. One stumbling block could be the location of the bus stops, since to have them on the street, especially during construction, would be dangerous and worsen already choked-dow- n ... The group agreed the obvious choice would be motel and business parking lots where the vehicles could get off the road for a few minutes to load and unload passengers. Council member Rob Sweeten said he was all for funding it, but feared the repercussions if the city chose or approached some property owners and not others. Jones pointed out that he wasnt about to risk alienating one or another ofhis motel partners, and Mayor Dave Sakrison agreed with Police Chief Mike Navarre that the city should be involved, with Navarre citing safety concerns and Sakrison saying, we dont want five different operators out there. At the end of the presentation, Metzler agreed to have staff look into what would be involved on the citys side, and the mayor asked Jones to talk with his colleagues about their end of the deal. . 1- iStmpi rfifmffr far fov&fiii n3 Learn PUBLIC NOTICE is hereby given that rVi how to the Administrative Control Board (the Board), of the Thompson Special receive medical benefits including Service District (the District), proposes to increase water service fees imposed within the service area nursing care at no cost to in-ho- me your family of the District.
