CSAs provide a means to purchase local produce through memberships, thereby receiving the freshest produce available while helping support sustainable agriculture. Wild peacocks, pheasants, screech owls, garden snakes, and deer frequent the farm, along with local florists, who Sarah provides with flowers for their arrangements. Sarah also uses her flowers in her own creations. I love to do bouquets for the Farmers Market, she says, where her works of art are available every Saturday morning. Sarah also provides weekly arrangements to some local businesses. Sarah has a very unique touch, says Vonda Louthan, who works with local dentist Jon Fuller, whose office gets a new arrangement each week. Her flowers remind you of home. They give you the same response you have when you see a Tom Till photo. Vonda adds, Theyre so beautiful you want to taste them, which I sometimes do. Sarah will tell you which ones are edible she has a wonderful licorice mint. I like borrowing from the vegetable garden, says Sarah, things like carrots going to seed, garlic scapes, blooming herbs, millet, and buckwheat. I also gather foliage and seedheads from a neighboring semi-wil- d orchard. I also love fragrance and will add lavender, mint, and whatever it takes for a full sensory experience. If its beautiful Ill use it, even if its what one would normally think of as being ordinary. You can sometimes eat Karuna Farms flowers, but dont try to eat the flowers you buy elsewhere. Were a nation of flower lovers (over 100 million roses are sold in the U.S. on Valentines Day alone), but over 60 percent of our flowers come from Latin American countries where 127 types of pesticides are used, many of which have been banned in the U.S. According to the book, The Game of the Rose (by Maharaj and Dorren), with the shipping involved, the petroleum embodied in buying a bouquet made of flowers grown in another country is equivalent to burning a quart of oil. David adds, All our flowers are grown to standards beyond organic, and the same goes for our vegetables. Our goal is to nurture and balance the soil and garden ecology to favor healthy, vigorous crops which in turn attract fewer pests, and to provide vibrant flowers and produce full of nutrients. Growing produce like this is deeply rewarding. It is, however, challenging to set prices that adequately reflect the labor involved. Most consumers compare our produce to that which is grown on thousands of acres and har- - FLORAL & GIFTS Flowers For All Occasions Balloon Bouquets 260-217- company for the countys com- puter systems management needs. basically was asking him why Footprints did that again, Bane said. I dont understand why I just vested by machines. Few customers realize the impacts their food choices have on the land, resources, and even their own health. And what price can one put on health? Studies have shown that organic produce has more vitamins and miner- als than vegetables, a factor that those who belong to CSAs take to heart. In addition, places like Karuna Farm grow varieties not found on your supermarket shelf. We grow over 40 non-organ- ic different vegetables here, says Sarah, and multiple varieties of most of them. For example, we grow 18 types of tomato, 12 types of peppers, and six varieties of garlic. And we like to offer customers unusual things, like husk cherries, celeriac, or amaranth greens. Sarah adds, If we could more demand for local proget duce, including flowers, this could eventually become a contribution to Moabs economy. It smacks of intimidation, he said. Every time the county gets away with something like this, I think it empowers them to push farther. Who knows where free speech in Grand County will end up. Stiles sent a letter to the county council requesting answers to a series of questions about the incident. He plans to publish the responses, or write about the countys refusal to respond if that happens, in an upcoming issue of his newspaper. Council member Joette Langianese says firing contractors or even county employees because they express an opinion violates their Constitutional right to free speech. Everybody has the right to say what they want, good and bad, about their governing body. We like the positive, of course, but if we shut people out every time they came and complained about something, were not doing the business of the people. Langianese also disputes Banes version of the story, as told to The She said Bane acknowledged, in a conversation last week, that she told the Footprints employee the county will no longer hire the company. Collar and Andrews said Times-lndepen-den- t. their employee unequivocally contends that Bane made the statement. I was told by Bane that this statement was in fact made, Langianese said. This wouldnt have been a big deal if she hadnt said we werent using them anymore. Councilman A1 McLeod likened the Footprints issue to an incident this spring in which Bane informed county employees that they were to only say positive things about 3. the county council. Some council members at the time said employees who made negative statements about the council could face negative consequences. Its called freedom of speech. And even though I may not like what people say, they have a right to say it, McLeod said. Im not going to retaliate against them. The idea that youre going to muzzle all the county employees, thats an abuse of power. And whats been done to Footprints, thats an abuse of power also. McLeod said the council is to blame for much ofthe nega- tive feeling that exists concerning county government. The county government right now is and they like to keep things under the radar, he said. semi-secreti- People dont trust whats going on because they dont un- derstand what were doing. Rex Tanner says he took a copy of the June Zephyr into Banes office and asked if the county is still doing business with Footprints. He did not, however, suggest that Bane take action against the company. And although the second ad did not mention the Grand County Council directly, Tanner said he believes the connection is implied. They toned it down, but there was still reference to public officials not serving the public. I felt that was directed at the county council because of the first ad, he said. If that June ad was the only ad that ran, I probably wouldnt have given it a second thought. Tanner said he respects Collars and Andrews right to speak their minds.
